Editor's Take

So here's the thing about Lunya-they're basically trying to convince you that what you wear to bed actually matters. And honestly? They might be onto something.

The brand's on a mission to put rest time on a pedestal, believing that when we're well rested, we're better at everything-relationships, work, even pickleball. It's kind of refreshing in a world that glorifies the hustle. Founded in 2014 by Ashley Merrill after she caught herself in the mirror wearing her husband's oversized t-shirt and boxer briefs, Lunya emerged from that universal "I deserve better than this" moment we've all had.

What sets them apart is their obsession with fabric technology. Each piece is the product of years of testing, sourcing, innovating, and producing with only the highest-quality materials and luxury fabrics available. Their washable silk is thermoregulating (fancy speak for it keeps you comfortable regardless of temperature), and they've developed proprietary fabrics that supposedly increase blood flow and reduce muscle aches. Notice how they're not just selling pajamas-they're selling the concept of "restwear," which is basically sleepwear you won't feel embarrassed wearing when you answer the door for a delivery.

But let's talk reality for a second. The price point is steep-we're talking $100+ for most sets. Lunya positions itself in the premium segment of the market, with most products priced over $100, emphasizing quality and design with luxury fabrics like washable silk, modal, and Pima cotton. And here's where it gets interesting: the brand lost about $135,000 every month on average for the past year on its physical retail network, with owned retail stores making up only 8% of last year's revenue. They actually filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2023, which tells you something about the challenges of scaling a DTC luxury brand.

The construction details are legitimately thoughtful-no-ride-up waistbands, strategic ventilation, pockets (yes, actual functional pockets in sleepwear). Their manufacturing facilities and mills are located in Los Angeles, allowing them to be hands-on and ensure Lunya quality and principles are woven into every garment. They're also committed to sustainability, using organic and natural fibers with bluesign-approved dyes that are safer for workers and the environment.

The brand calls their stores "Bedrooms," which is either clever branding or slightly weird depending on your perspective. They've got locations in Santa Monica (which doubles as their HQ), Boston, and Los Angeles. The whole vibe is very California-wellness-meets-luxury-loungewear.

One more thing-the name itself is a play on the Swedish word "lugna," meaning to calm, though it also resembles "luna" (moon in Latin), making it pretty perfect for sleepwear. Whether you're willing to invest $200 in pajamas is ultimately a personal call, but at least now you know what you're getting into.
