Editor's Take

So here's the thing about Maisonette-it's basically what happens when two former Vogue editors become moms and realize shopping for kids is an absolute nightmare. Sylvana Durrett and Luisana Mendoza de Roccia started this whole thing in 2016 because, as working mothers, they found it incredibly difficult to find quality stuff for their children. And honestly? They weren't wrong.

There are tens of thousands of brands for kids in the United States alone, so what makes Maisonette different is that they do the work for you. They make it easy to come to their site and find things for children within a specific age range, at a specific price point, or that uphold certain values like organic materials. It's like having that friend who somehow always knows where to find the perfect birthday gift-except it's a website.

The numbers are pretty impressive too. Maisonette currently has over 1,000 brands on their site, all of which have met the specifications of their brand. They stand for quality, value, and safety, which matter a lot when people are buying for their kids. We're talking everything from those cult European brands you've never heard of to the tried-and-true favorites that every parent swears by.

But here's where it gets interesting-the Brooklyn-based business was founded in March 2017 and since its launch, the privately owned company has raised $4.3 million seed capital from firms like NEA and Thrive Capital and surpassed its 2017 revenue forecast by more than 40 percent. That's not just lucky timing; that's tapping into something parents desperately needed.

The children's wear market has outpaced all other apparel markets, reaching $300 billion in growth over the past five years. And Maisonette positioned itself right in the sweet spot of that explosion. They're not trying to be Amazon for kids-they're more like the Net-a-Porter of children's stuff, curating instead of just aggregating.

What really sets them apart is their editorial approach. At Maisonette, they believe that what you consume for your children, whether it's content or clothing, it matters. They want to bring their customers and their audience, these "modern parents," the resources, products, and content that help them navigate the journey of raising children. It's not just about selling you a onesie; it's about understanding that choosing things for your kids feels like it carries more weight than choosing things for yourself.

The marketplace model is smart too. Maisonette operates on a multi-vendor marketplace model. Rather than holding inventory, the company partners with the site's brands and vendors to sell their products. This model allows the business to scale and grow quickly while having the ability to be flexible and take risks on certain categories without it being a cost.

Honestly? I think they've figured out something that a lot of other companies miss-parents don't just want more options, they want better options. And sometimes, having someone else do the initial filtering is worth paying for.
