Editor's Take
So here's the thing about Mansur Gavriel-they basically created the first post-recession It bag, and they did it with just two styles. A bucket bag and a tote. That's it. Back when they launched, the contemporary handbag market was kind of a wasteland. You either went full luxury at eye-watering prices or settled for something that felt, well, disposable. Rachel Mansur and Floriana Gavriel saw that gap and filled it with vegetable-tanned Italian leather in the most gorgeous colors you've ever seen.
The bucket bag retailed for around $495 when it dropped, which felt almost radical at the time-expensive enough to feel special, but not so expensive that you needed a trust fund. And people went absolutely nuts for it. We're talking waiting lists that stretched for months. Fashion editors carried them. Street style stars posed with them. By the time Fashion Week rolled around that first year, the bags were everywhere.
But what really set them apart was this obsessive attention to minimalism. No logos. No hardware screaming for attention. Just clean lines, impeccable leather, and these jewel-toned interiors that made opening your bag feel like a little moment of joy. They took vegetable-tanned leather-traditionally a men's accessory material-and made it feel modern and feminine. The brand launched with just $100 for their first lookbook. They shot it themselves, booked a booth at a trade show, and the rest is history.
The founders met in Los Angeles at a concert, then solidified their partnership the next day at the Downtown LA flower market. That origin story kind of explains everything about the brand's aesthetic-there's this organic, artistic sensibility running through all of it. Color is their language, nature is their guide, art is their muse. And you can see it. Even now, years after that initial bucket bag frenzy, their products have this timeless quality that doesn't feel trendy or dated.
They've expanded beyond bags into shoes and ready-to-wear, always maintaining that same minimalist ethos. The brand briefly operated standalone stores-a bubblegum pink flagship in NYC and a stunning Melrose Place location in LA with an indoor garden and café-but they've since shifted focus back to their online presence and partnerships with luxury retailers like Bergdorf Goodman and Saks.
What's interesting is how they've navigated the challenges that come after creating a viral product. Not every brand survives that initial hype cycle, but Mansur Gavriel has managed to build something with staying power. They've taken on investors, weathered management changes, and adapted to shifting consumer tastes. The bucket bag might not generate waiting lists anymore, but the brand has evolved into something more substantial-a full lifestyle offering that still honors those original principles of quality, craft, and understated elegance.
Their commitment to sustainability is worth noting too. They've started using archived leather trimmings to create upcycled collections, maximizing materials to minimize waste. It's not just marketing speak-it's baked into how they think about design and production.
