Editor's Take
So here's the thing about Marchesa-it's one of those brands that basically defined red carpet glamour for a solid decade, and then, well, things got complicated.
Founded in 2004 by Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig, the brand was named after socialite Marchesa Luisa Casati, this eccentric Italian heiress who was basically the original fashion influencer. And honestly? The name fits. These aren't your everyday dresses-we're talking about the kind of gowns that make you stop scrolling. Think intricate embroidery, romantic draping, and that distinctly feminine aesthetic that somehow manages to feel both vintage-inspired and totally modern.
The brand really hit its stride in the mid-2000s and 2010s. Marchesa became known for designing dresses for several celebrities, including Scarlett Johansson, Jennifer Lopez, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, and Penélope Cruz. You'd see their gowns everywhere during awards season-the Oscars, the Met Gala, you name it. Sienna Miller wore Marchesa on the cover of Vogue magazine's September 2007 issue, which was kind of a big deal.
But here's where it gets messy. The brand's success was complicated by its connection to Harvey Weinstein, who was married to Chapman. After the 2017 scandal, Marchesa faced a pretty significant backlash, with many celebrities avoiding the brand entirely. In May 2018, Scarlett Johansson broke the months-long trend of red-carpet Marchesa avoidance by wearing a custom-made gown from the brand to the Met Gala. In June 2019, Craig announced her intention to leave Marchesa, leaving Chapman to continue the brand.
Today, Marchesa is a global fashion brand that specializes in elegant eveningwear, bridal and daywear. Since Marchesa's debut, it has become renowned for a distinctively feminine, romantic aesthetic. In the last 19 years, Marchesa has expanded into a full lifestyle brand that offers various lines including Marchesa Notte, Marchesa Rosa, Couture and Notte Bridal, Marchesa Active and childrenswear.
The designs themselves? Still gorgeous. Chapman's got this ability to create these architectural, almost sculptural pieces that somehow still feel soft and wearable. The brand's known for its signature floral appliqués, delicate beading, and that sort of ethereal quality that makes their dresses photograph beautifully.
