Editor's Take
Here's the thing about Margaux-they're kind of solving a problem most of us didn't even realize we had. Or maybe we did, but we just accepted it as the price of looking put-together.
An estimated 77% of women need a "non-standard" shoe size, which is basically code for "the shoe industry has been failing most of us for decades." And Margaux's founders, Sarah Pierson and Alexa Buckley, decided to do something about it after meeting at a cab stand in college and becoming best friends. Because apparently that's how great shoe companies are born.
What makes them different? Well, for starters, they offer three widths in European sizes 33 to 45 (a US 2.5 to 14). That's huge. But it's not just about the size range-though that alone would be impressive. Every single pair is handmade in Spain at a family-owned factory they've been working with since day one. There's something reassuring about that kind of consistency, you know?
The shoes themselves have this signature 5mm foam padding in the insole, which sounds minimal but apparently makes all the difference. People who review these shoes tend to use words like "cloud-like" and "no break-in period needed," which, if you've ever suffered through breaking in a pair of ballet flats, you know is basically a miracle. The Demi flat-their first-ever design-has achieved something close to cult status. It's one of those shoes that once you see it on someone's feet, you start noticing it everywhere.
But here's what really gets me: their factory runs on 100% renewable energy, and they're obsessive about minimizing plastic in their packaging. So you can feel good about the purchase beyond just the comfort factor. Plus, they do this annual shoe drive benefiting women reentering the workforce, which feels very on-brand for a company founded by two women who clearly think about these things.
The price point sits in that interesting middle ground-not cheap (think $220-$345 for most styles), but nowhere near luxury brand territory either. And when you consider that these are handmade shoes with Italian leather that people are still wearing four years later without needing a cobbler, the math starts to make sense.
They've got a permanent store in New York's West Village on Bleecker Street, plus they've done pop-ups in places like LA, San Francisco, and Boston. But honestly, most people probably discover them the way everyone discovers everything these days-through a weirdly well-targeted Instagram ad. And then they fall down the rabbit hole of trying to decide between the Demi, the Pointe, or the Dylan sandal.
One more thing: their customer service is apparently exceptional. Like, they'll do virtual fit consultations to help you figure out your size, which is pretty clutch when you're ordering online and dealing with European sizing. And their return policy is straightforward-14 days for a refund, 30 days for store credit or exchange.
So yeah, Margaux. They're not reinventing the wheel, but they're making shoes that actually fit real feet, look good with everything, and don't make you want to rip them off by 2 PM. Sometimes that's all you need.
