Returns
Are there any items that are non-refundable?
For non-refundable rates, guests should be aware that these reservations typically cannot be modified or canceled without forfeiting the full payment. During peak seasons, special events, or holidays, the cancellation policy could be more stringent, allowing for fewer days of notice or possibly non-refundable reservations.
How will I receive my refund?
If you cancel a reservation within the specified cancellation period, Marriott typically issues a refund for any prepaid rates. For reservations made with Marriott Bonvoy points or a Free Night Award, these will be returned to your account immediately if the cancellation is made within the policy terms.
How do I start a return online?
Sign in to your Marriott Bonvoy account and click on My Trips to locate your reservation. Once you do you'll notice 2 buttons that say View/Modify and Cancel. Click the Cancel button to cancel your booking. After that, simply click Yes to confirm your cancellation, and your reservation will be officially canceled.
Editor's Take
So here's the thing about Marriott Hotels - they're kind of everywhere, and that's exactly the point. With over 9,000 properties scattered across more than 130 countries, you're basically never too far from one. But what's interesting is how they've managed to stay relevant for nearly a century without feeling like your grandparents' hotel chain.
The Marriott story starts in 1927 with a root beer stand in Washington, D.C. - yeah, you read that right. J. Willard and Alice Marriott were slinging root beer before they ever thought about pillows and room service. Fast forward to 1957, and they opened their first hotel, the Twin Bridges Motor Hotel in Virginia. Now they're the world's largest hotel company, which is pretty wild when you think about it.
What really sets Marriott apart these days is their Marriott Bonvoy loyalty program. It's not just about collecting points (though you definitely can rack those up). The program ties together all 30+ of their brands - from budget-friendly options to ultra-luxury properties. And they've gotten smart about the whole digital thing. Mobile check-in, keyless entry, chatting with the front desk through an app - they're actually making hotel stays less of a hassle.
Here's something most people don't know: Marriott has this command center called M Live at their headquarters in Bethesda. They literally monitor social media posts from guests in real-time across 4,400+ properties worldwide using geo-fencing technology. Post an engagement photo from a Marriott? The team might send champagne to your room. It's equal parts impressive and slightly Big Brother-ish, but guests seem to love the personalized attention.
The company's also been pushing hard into content creation. They launched their own content studio back in 2014 and have partnered with YouTube stars and created original video series. Their "French Kiss" short film alone generated $600,000 in bookings. Not bad for a hotel company playing in the entertainment space.
Their headquarters situation is worth mentioning too. In 2022, they moved into this massive 21-story, 785,000-square-foot building in downtown Bethesda - the largest office building in the city. It's got a childcare center, meditation rooms, and even a cafeteria called The Hot Shoppe (a nod to their restaurant roots). They clearly take care of their 3,500+ corporate employees.
But let's talk about what matters when you're actually staying there. The rooms have gotten a serious upgrade in recent years with their "mSpot" design featuring clean lines and updated tech. Most properties now offer that Greatroom concept - basically a lobby that doesn't feel like a lobby, where you can work, socialize, or just hang out with a cocktail.
One thing to watch out for: their cancellation policies can be tricky. Most require 48 hours notice, but some luxury properties want 14 days or even 60 days advance cancellation. Always check the fine print on your specific booking because those fees can sting.
The brand's also been aggressive about acquisitions and expansion. They picked up Starwood Hotels back in 2016, which brought brands like W Hotels and St. Regis into the fold. More recently, they snagged City Express in Mexico and announced they're acquiring Citizen M for $355 million. They're not slowing down.
What's kind of refreshing is how they've embraced their role as a hospitality company rather than just a place to sleep. Their restaurants are actually worth checking out - some properties have Michelin-starred dining. And their focus on local sourcing and regional flavors means you're not just eating generic hotel food.
The Marriott Bonvoy program is legitimately one of the better hotel loyalty programs out there. Elite status gets you real perks - room upgrades, late checkout, lounge access. And unlike some programs that make you jump through hoops, the benefits actually feel meaningful.
