Editor's Take

You know those wooden puzzles that somehow survive three kids, two moves, and that one time they got left outside in the rain? Yeah, those are probably Melissa & Doug. And there's a reason for that.

Founded in 1988 by Melissa and Doug Bernstein in their basement and Doug's parents' garage, this isn't some faceless corporation churning out plastic junk. It's a company built by two actual people-parents of six, no less-who apparently decided that childhood needed rescuing from screens and batteries. The company has made more than 5,000 products, which is kind of staggering when you think about it. That's a lot of ways to keep kids entertained without an iPad.

Here's what makes them different: It's the kind of play that doesn't come with a screen. It's not battery-powered. It's kid-powered. Simple concept, right? But in an age where toddlers can navigate Netflix better than their grandparents, it's actually pretty radical. Their toys are designed to be open-ended-meaning a wooden block can be a phone, a car, a spaceship, or whatever else a four-year-old's imagination decides it should be that afternoon.

The quality thing isn't just marketing speak, either. They make well-crafted toys that are developed with care to be passed down from generation to generation or shared family to family. Walk into any preschool and you'll probably spot their stuff-those chunky wooden puzzles with the little pegs, the magnetic fishing game, that pizza set where the toppings stick with velcro. Melissa & Doug is known as the #1 preschool brand for wooden toys and their toys are distributed in more than 100 countries and enjoyed by more than 60 million families.

They've also done something unusual for a primarily online brand: they opened their first flagship retail store in The Westchester, a premium shopping mall in White Plains, New York. Not just a store, but an experience-there's apparently a spot where kids can measure themselves in scoops of ice cream, which is exactly the kind of whimsical detail you'd expect from people who've spent 35 years thinking about how children play.

The company partners with the American Academy of Pediatrics on something called the Power of Play initiative, which sounds corporate but is actually about helping parents manage screen time and build life skills through, you know, actual playing. The Melissa & Doug signature on every product is a commitment to the highest quality standards. Their first hit toys were wooden puzzles. Whether chunky, peg, floor, or jigsaw, their puzzles have the perfect fit.

So basically, if you're looking for toys that won't break in a week, don't require batteries, and might actually spark some creativity instead of just passive consumption, this is your brand. They've been doing it since before it was trendy to worry about screen time, and they're still doing it now-just with a bigger budget and Spin Master's distribution network behind them.
