Editor's Take

So here's the thing about Mented Cosmetics-they're basically doing what the beauty industry should've been doing all along, but somehow took until 2017 to figure out. Founded on the belief that everyone should be able to find themselves in the world of beauty, no matter your skin tone, because when it comes to beauty, no one deserves to be an afterthought.

Created by black women, KJ Miller and Amanda E. Johnson, the brand started in a 1-bedroom Harlem apartment with a pretty simple mission that was somehow revolutionary: make makeup that actually shows up on deeper skin tones. Mented is short for pigmented, because pigmentation is key. Their products not only show up, they enhance the natural beauty of women of all hues.

And they've been crushing it. The company closed a $5 million Series A round led by Corazon Capital and CircleUp Growth Partners, which is pretty impressive for a brand that started with just $10,000. But what's really smart is how they've scaled-you can now find their products at Target, ULTA, Walgreens & select CVS locations, making quality inclusive makeup accessible to way more people.

The product range has grown from their original six gorgeous nude lip shades made specifically for black and brown beauties to a full line that includes lipstick, setting powder, blush, bronzer, and more. Everything is cruelty free & vegan, and they offer free shipping on orders $40+.

What I really appreciate is their approach to customer service. They actually help you find your shade match-you can submit your photo to [email protected] for a custom match via email or schedule a complimentary Mented Cosmetics Complexion Consultation. That's the kind of personal touch that builds loyalty.

The brand's social media game is strong too, with 238K followers on Instagram and a presence across all major platforms. They leverage social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok for visual storytelling and direct customer engagement, which makes sense when your whole thing is showing how products actually look on real people.

Honestly, Mented represents something bigger than just another makeup brand. They're proof that when you center the needs of people who've been ignored by an industry, you don't just serve that community better-you innovate in ways that benefit everyone.
