So here's the thing about Michaels - it's basically become the craft world's answer to Target, except instead of wandering out with random home decor you didn't need, you're leaving with glitter glue and yarn for a project you'll probably start next month. Maybe.
With over 1,300 stores spread across 49 states and Canada, Michaels has quietly become the place where creativity meets convenience. They're North America's largest provider of arts, crafts, framing, floral and wall décor, which sounds impressive until you realize that just means they've figured out how to make money off everyone's Pinterest dreams and New Year's resolutions to "be more creative."
What's kind of fascinating is how they've evolved. Founded back in 1973 when businessman Michael J. Dupey converted a failing Ben Franklin five and dime store into an arts and crafts store in Dallas, the company has grown into something much bigger than just selling paint and canvas. They've got their own custom framing operation, a whole marketplace for handmade goods called MakerPlace, and they even jumped on the fabric and party supply bandwagon when competitors like Jo-Ann and Party City hit rough patches.
Walk into any Michaels and you'll find everything from scrapbooking supplies to Cricut machines, from seasonal decorations to baking supplies. They've developed a dozen private brands - names like Recollections, Artist's Loft, and Loops & Threads - which basically means they're making their own versions of everything at better margins. Smart business move, honestly.
But what really sets Michaels apart is how they've adapted to the modern shopper. You can order online and pick up in-store, get same-day delivery, or just browse their weekly ad for deals that rotate constantly. They operate both physical stores and robust online presences at Michaels.com and Michaels.ca. And they're not shy about promotions - walk in on any given day and you'll find buy-one-get-one deals, percentage-off sales, and those famous 40% off coupons that somehow make you feel like you're getting away with something.
The company's also gotten into the experience economy, offering classes, workshops, and even birthday parties for kids. It's not just about selling supplies anymore; it's about selling the whole creative lifestyle. Which, let's be real, is exactly what keeps people coming back even when their craft closet is already overflowing.
