Editor's Take
There's something kind of magical about a company that's been making the same thing for nearly 80 years and still manages to feel relevant. Minnetonka started in 1946 as basically a roadside souvenir shop-you know, the kind of place where tourists would stop on their way west and pick up trinkets alongside postcards. But those leather moccasins they sold for $3.80? They became the whole story.
And here's the thing about Minnetonka that most people don't realize: they've been quietly cool across like four different decades and totally different cultural movements. In the 1950s, their Thunderbird moccasin was a hit with counterculture guys. Then the hippies loved their fringed boots in the '60s. Fast forward to the '80s, and suddenly they're a prep school staple AND a country music fashion icon at the same time. That's kind of wild when you think about it-how many brands can pull off being both yacht club and honky-tonk?
The family-owned aspect matters here too. The Miller family has been running things since the 1950s, and they're now on their fourth generation. David Miller is CEO, his daughter Jori Miller Sherer is president, and another grandson oversees production. So when they say they're committed to quality and craftsmanship, it's not just marketing speak-it's literally their family legacy on the line.
But let's talk about what they actually make. The moccasins are handcrafted from suede, deerskin, sheepskin, even moosehide. They've got that soft, almost-barefoot feel that makes them perfect house shoes, but the rubber-soled versions are sturdy enough for actual outdoor wear. Notice how they've managed to keep that handmade quality while scaling up to be sold everywhere from their own website to Nordstrom? That's not easy to pull off.
Recently, they've been doing some really thoughtful work with Native American communities. In a pretty significant move, they redesigned their iconic Thunderbird moccasin with Anishinaabe artist Lucie Skjefte from the Red Lake Nation, renaming it "Animikii" (which means Thunderbird in Ojibwemowin). Skjefte actually owns the copyright to the design, which is a big deal in terms of authentic collaboration versus appropriation.
The company employs around 50-90 people at their Minneapolis headquarters, and they manufacture in the Dominican Republic and China. They've got a 90-day satisfaction guarantee, which is pretty generous in the footwear world. And yeah, their slippers and moccasins have developed this cult following-people who try them often become lifers.
What's interesting is how Minnetonka has stayed true to its core product while expanding just enough. They've added sandals, sneakers, and boots over the years, but they haven't tried to become something they're not. They're still that comfortable, casual, quality footwear brand that your grandparents might've worn and your kids might wear too. That kind of staying power is rare.
