ganavya was born in New York, raised in South India, and now travels the world performing as a jazz vocalist. Her music is spiritual, grounding, and ethereal. She draws upon her roots, combining jazz, spiritual music, and Indian music traditions to produce a sound truly unique in today's musical landscape. Her debut album, Arkham: Onnu, is full of jazz standards performed not in English, but Tamil. More recently, her 2024 release, Daughter of a Temple, features 30 collaborators including Esmeralda Spalding, Peter Sellars, and IONE. Other collaborators throughout her career include Quincy Jones and electronic artist Floating Points. Her work largely pays tribute to Alice Coltrane with themes of spirituality, prayer, and togetherness. At her Iowa City performance, expect to hear from her bandmates Max Ridley on bass and Charles Overton on the harp. A performer of classical, contemporary, and improvisational works for saxophone, she is known for her musical expression and the ability to adapt to a variety of ensembles and artistic settings, frequently collaborating with composers and multidisciplinary artists.
