Englert Presents

Asleep at the Wheel

Live @ The Englert

Wednesday, December 10th @ 7:30 PM

Asleep at the Wheel is back on the road with a new album in tow, Riding High in Texas, and there's plenty of honky tonkin' to go around. Over 30 albums into their long standing career in the American tradition of Western swing, Asleep at the Wheel continues to reinvent themselves as they gain members and seek out new collaborations.

Ray Benson, who has been a Texas institution for years, solidifies himself as a living legacy on Riding High in Texas. The album features Lyle Lovett and Billy Strings, as well as new AATW fiddler and vocalist Ian Stewart as just a small part of its star studded collabs.

Talking to the history of storytelling in his music, Ray Benson (cofounder and frontman) says that, "It’s all about a story. It’s either describing the love of your mother or describing the love of country living or describing cheating and the difficulty of relationships or just something a little silly. But they’re always telling a story because that’s what makes it so relatable to people," (Texas Roadways).

Check out Asleep at the Wheel's collaboration with No Depression at Merle Fest 2025 in anticipation of their upcoming Iowa City performance.

The Englert + Great Plains Action Society Present

Truthsgiving

Featuring Audiopharmacy
Live @ The Englert

Saturday, November 15th @ 7:30 PM

Great Plains Action Society was created out of a need to tie together Iowa's Indigenous communities with rural Iowans. Truthsgiving is a continuation of the forging of cultural ties done by Great Plains Action Society, creating a platform of solidarity and celebration between Iowans and Indigenous Peoples. On Saturday, November 15th, Audiopharmacy will be live at the Englert as part of Truthsgiving, a celebration that rejects the colonial myth behind Thanksgiving that perpetuates dangerous stereotypes and whitewashed history.

Spawned from its roots in Hip Hop, Audiopharmacy creates timeless music and art beyond any one genre. The ensemble is made up of multi-cultural creatives with roots indigenous to Turtle Island (North America), Africa, Asia, the Pacific Islands, South America, India and Europe. Their unique sound is eclectic + avant-garde, yet rooted in the voice of the people and Mama Earth. By intricately fusing turntablism, live instrumentation, global musical styles, poetic lyricism, movement, visual projection, and indigenous prayers, Audiopharmacy elevates the meaning, sound, and purpose of Hip Hop.

This event will also feature V Fixmer-Oraiz – Johnson County Supervisor, Alejandra Escobar – Escucha Mi Voz, Joe Maxwell – U of I Native American Student Association  & The Iowa City Free Fridge Organizers.

The Englert + True Endeavors Present

William Elliott Whitmore
in support of Rodney Crowell
Live @ The Englert

Wednesday, November 19th @ 7:30 PM

William Elliott Whitmore comes back to his Iowa roots in an upcoming performance in support of Rodney Crowell. Whitmore, who has graced the Englert stage many times, "blends modern Americana with punk’s DIY urgency and ethos and traditional folk music inspired by field recordings and songs from the 1920’s – 1940’s," (Everything is Noise).

Silently the Mind Breaks is his most recent studio release, and features Whitmore, "with a gravitas indicative of the very best blues and folk singers, touched by the weariness of the world, clear enough with a bit of country road gravel, and delivered like a Pentecostal preacher sermonizing on death and redemption," (Everything is Noise).

Following his most recent Englert appearance for Mission Creek 2025, Kent Williams of Little Village writes, "If you’re lucky, you have experienced the charisma of gifted performers. They demand the center of attention, and reward it by holding you rapt... He gives his listeners something real," (Little Village).
