Editor's Take

So here's the thing about Mizzen+Main - they basically looked at the dress shirt and said "what if this didn't suck?" And honestly, that's kind of brilliant.

The company started in 2012 when founder Kevin Lavelle spotted some poor guy running up a hill in D.C. wearing a dress shirt that looked like he'd just jumped in a pool. The shirt was completely sweat-soaked, and Lavelle had this lightbulb moment: why not make dress shirts out of performance fabric? You know, the stuff your gym clothes are made from. The kind that actually breathes and moves with you instead of turning into a soggy mess by 10 AM.

What makes them different isn't just the fabric, though that's a big part of it. Their shirts are moisture-wicking, wrinkle-resistant, and - here's the kicker - you can throw them in the washing machine. No dry cleaning. Ever. For guys who've been dropping $15 a pop at the dry cleaner every week, that alone is worth the price of admission. The shirts have four-way stretch too, which means you can actually move your arms without feeling like you're trapped in a straightjacket.

They've expanded way beyond just dress shirts now. You can get polos, pants, blazers, even full suits made with the same performance fabrics. The Fresco Suit they launched recently is designed for guys who need to look sharp at weddings but also want to actually dance without sweating through their jacket. It's sourced from this Italian mill called Tollegno 1900 and uses eco-friendly technical fabrics that stretch and breathe.

The brand's gotten some serious traction - they've got about 10 retail stores across the U.S. now, plus they're sold at Nordstrom, Dillard's, Saks, and over 600 other retailers. Phil Mickelson was an early investor and brand ambassador (though they parted ways in 2021), and they've signed several PGA Tour pros since then. Makes sense when you think about it - golfers spend hours outside in the heat wearing dress shirts, so they're basically the perfect test case for performance menswear.

The pricing isn't cheap - dress shirts typically run around $125-$145 - but people seem willing to pay it. When you factor in no dry cleaning costs and the fact that these shirts apparently last forever, the math starts to make more sense. Plus, there's something to be said for not having to think about whether your shirt's going to look like a crumpled mess by lunchtime.

What's interesting is how they've positioned themselves. They're not trying to be super fashion-forward or trendy. It's more about taking classic menswear staples and making them actually functional for modern life. The designs are pretty traditional - you're not going to stand out in a crowd, but that's kind of the point. You'll just be comfortable while everyone else is tugging at their collar.
