So here's the thing about M.M.LaFleur-it's basically what happens when someone finally gets fed up with the whole "what do I wear to work" dilemma and decides to do something about it. Sarah LaFleur was working in finance, spending way too much money on clothes she didn't even like, watching them fall apart after a few wears. Sound familiar? She looked at the guys in her office throwing on suits without a second thought and thought, why can't we have that?
The brand launched in 2013 with this concept they call "Power Casual"-which is kind of brilliant when you think about it. It's the clothing equivalent of work-life balance. Not stuffy corporate, not too casual, just... right. And they're not messing around with quality either. These pieces are designed with the same attention to detail you'd expect from high-end fashion houses, but they're actually functional. We're talking adjustable hems, bra-strap holders, machine-washable fabrics. The stuff that matters when you're living in these clothes five days a week.
But what really sets them apart is this whole Bento Box thing. Named after those beautifully composed Japanese lunch boxes (LaFleur grew up in Japan, which explains a lot about the brand's aesthetic), it's basically a stylist-curated box of clothes that shows up at your door. You try everything on at home, keep what works, send back what doesn't. No obligation, no pressure, no wandering around department stores on your lunch break. They launched this in 2015 when the company was struggling, and it completely turned things around.
The numbers are pretty impressive too. Their average order is often over $500, and they've grown to have physical locations in major cities-New York (they have two there), Boston, Chicago, Washington D.C., and Philadelphia. Though their San Francisco location appears to have closed. Each showroom offers complimentary styling appointments where you can work one-on-one with a stylist, sip prosecco, and actually enjoy the shopping experience. First-time visitors get 15% off, which is a nice touch.
And they're not just about selling clothes. M.M.LaFleur donates 10% of their annual profits to organizations that support women's success. They've got this whole sustainability initiative going-analyzing fabrics, converting to natural fibers that decompose or recycled materials. They even launched Second Act, a resale site for pre-loved M.M.LaFleur pieces, because they know not everyone can afford their price point (retail runs about $110 for tops, up to $325 for dresses).
Notice how they've built this whole community around the brand? They created Slack channels for customers during COVID, and women just ran with it-posting jobs, sharing childcare tips, supporting each other way beyond just talking about clothes. That's the kind of loyalty you can't buy with marketing.
The founder's story is pretty compelling too. Daughter of a diplomat, grew up all over the place, went to Japanese schools, worked in consulting and private equity before deciding to start a fashion company. She recruited Miyako Nakamura, who was the head designer at Zac Posen, as co-founder and creative director. That partnership lasted 14 years before Nakamura stepped down to pursue other projects.
So yeah, if you're tired of the whole getting-dressed-for-work struggle, or you just want clothes that look polished but don't require dry cleaning every time you wear them, M.M.LaFleur might be worth checking out. They've basically built an entire business around making one part of your day easier. And honestly? In 2025, that's not nothing.
