Editor's Take

So here's the thing about Moda Operandi-it's basically what happens when someone finally figured out that fashion week shouldn't just be for editors and buyers. Founded in 2010 by Lauren Santo Domingo and Áslaug Magnúsdóttir, the platform allows customers to preorder looks directly from designers, immediately after their runway show. And yeah, that's kind of revolutionary when you think about it.

The whole concept started because Santo Domingo, a former Vogue editor, noticed this weird disconnect. Designers would send these incredible, bold pieces down the runway, but by the time clothes hit stores, everything felt watered down. Safe. Boring, even. Moda Operandi hosts online trunk shows that let customers secure runway fashion months in advance by placing a 50-percent deposit-which means you're essentially getting access to pieces that might never make it to traditional retail.

But here's where it gets interesting. The platform now features 900+ designers with free shipping and returns, and they've expanded way beyond just runway preorders. They've got this "Boutique" section for people who can't wait months for their order (because let's be real, sometimes you need that dress now). Plus they've moved into fine jewelry, home decor, and beauty. The company ships to 125 countries, which is pretty wild when you consider they started with just runway preorders.

Notice how luxury retail keeps trying to crack the online code? Moda figured it out by not trying to replicate the in-store experience-they created something entirely new. They've got these personal stylists who actually know what's in your closet. Not in a creepy way, but in a "here's how this new Johanna Ortiz dress works with those shoes you bought last season" kind of way. The company's 25 stylists, based in New York, Los Angeles and London, know what's in their customers' closets, which honestly sounds like the kind of service that should exist but rarely does.

The business model is pretty clever too. That 50-percent deposit thing? It's not just about securing your order-it gives designers actual data about what people want before they commit to full production runs. Less waste, more of what actually sells. And apparently it works, because sales grew 54 percent from a previously reported $69 million in 2015.

There's something refreshingly honest about a platform that says "yeah, you're gonna wait four months for this dress, but it's going to be exactly what you saw on the runway." In a world of fast fashion and instant gratification, Moda Operandi is basically the opposite. And somehow, that's exactly what a certain type of fashion lover wants.
