Editor's Take

Here's the thing about Motherhood Maternity-it's kind of the OG of maternity wear, and there's a reason it's stuck around since 1982. The brand basically invented the idea that pregnant women shouldn't have to choose between comfort and looking put-together. And honestly? That Secret Fit Belly thing they're always talking about isn't just marketing fluff. It's actually pretty genius.

So the company went through some stuff. Filed for bankruptcy in 2019, closed all their physical stores by early 2020, and got scooped up by Marquee Brands (yeah, the same folks who own Martha Stewart and BCBG). But instead of just fading away like so many retail casualties, they did something interesting. They went all-in on e-commerce for a few years, figured out what actually worked, and then came back to physical retail in 2024 through a partnership with Kohl's. That's not nothing.

What's changed is the vibe. They dropped "Maternity" from the name-it's just "motherhood" now, all lowercase, very minimalist. The rebrand feels deliberate, like they're trying to say this isn't your mom's maternity store (even though, technically, it probably was). They're positioning themselves as modern, inclusive, solution-based. Those are buzzwords, sure, but when you look at the product line, there's substance there. Jeans that actually fit throughout pregnancy. Nursing tops that don't scream "nursing top." Basics that work for all four trimesters-yes, they count postpartum as the fourth trimester, which feels right.

The price point is accessible, which matters when you're buying clothes you'll only wear for a limited time. And they've figured out the wholesale game-you can find their stuff on Amazon, at Macy's, through Walmart.com. It's everywhere, basically, which is either convenient or overwhelming depending on how you shop.

Notice how they're leaning hard into that community angle? The website has expert guides, trimester checklists, partnerships with doulas and nutritionists. They're trying to be more than just a place to buy stretchy pants. Whether that resonates or feels like overreach probably depends on where you are in your pregnancy journey.

The return policy is straightforward-30 days from delivery, you pay return shipping unless something's damaged. Final sale items are actually final sale, which some people find frustrating but at least they're upfront about it. No exchanges, which is annoying if you order the wrong size, but you can just return and reorder.

What's interesting is how they've adapted. Five years ago, this brand looked like it was done. Now they're back in Kohl's stores, they've got a fresh identity, and they're actually competing in a space that's gotten way more crowded with brands like Hatch and Storq. The fact that they're still relevant says something about understanding their customer. Pregnant women need clothes that work. Not clothes that make a statement about pregnancy, just clothes that happen to accommodate a growing bump and then a postpartum body. Motherhood gets that, apparently.
