Mountain Hardwear jobs

We like our small-company feel, team orientation, down-to-earth approach and casual get-after-it atmosphere. Many of us get outside as much as possible, test our product, challenge ourselves, and stay connected to the outdoor joy and friends that led us into this field. In work and outdoors, Mountain Hardwear helps people find and push the edges of their potential, grow beyond what they thought is possible, and evolve into their best selves.

Returns

What is the return window?
Returns are accepted within 60 days of the purchase date. The warehouse needs to receive and process your return within 60 days of purchase to process a refund back to your original form of payment.

Do I need a receipt to return an item?
Your Order Number is located on your purchase confirmation email and in your online account. A copy of your original receipt may be required. While not explicitly stated as mandatory for all returns, having your order information is necessary to initiate the return process.

Are there any items that are non-returnable?
Mountain Hardwear will gladly accept returns on all purchases made on their website which are in original condition; unworn with tags attached. Items must be unworn, unused, in original packaging, with all original tags still attached to be eligible for return.

How will I receive my refund?
A refund in the amount of the price paid for the item and applicable taxes will be issued to or in the form of your original method of payment. A $6 flat rate return shipping will be taken out of your refund instead of paying the rate upfront to the shipping carrier. Customers will receive an email notifying them when their refund is processed.

How do I start a return online?
Log in and go to Order History or start your return by entering your order information. Customers can now initiate a return by printing off a return label and ship the item back using UPS. Print your return shipping label, reuse the original packaging or appropriate shipping materials to pack your order, include the item tags, make sure the packaging is secure, and affix the shipping label so that it's clearly visible. Take your return to your nearest UPS drop-off location.

Editor's Take

So here's the thing about Mountain Hardwear-they're not your typical outdoor brand trying to be everything to everyone. Founded back in 1993 by a group of former Sierra Designs employees who basically said "screw it, we're doing this our way," the company has always had this kind of rebellious streak running through it. They saw the outdoor industry getting soft, dumbing down products for casual users, and decided to stay laser-focused on serious mountain athletes instead.

And honestly? That focus shows. These guys have been supporting expeditions on the world's highest peaks for three decades now. We're talking about gear that's been tested on 8,000-meter mountains, not just your local hiking trail. Their first sponsored athlete was Ed Viesturs-the first American to climb all fourteen of those monster peaks-and he actually helped develop their products. That's the kind of street cred you can't fake.

What's interesting is how they've maintained that technical edge even after Columbia Sportswear acquired them in 2003. You'd think a big corporate buyout would water things down, but Mountain Hardwear still operates with that small-company feel out of their Richmond, California headquarters. Their designers work directly with their athlete team, sweating every stitch and detail. It's almost obsessive, really.

The product line spans pretty much everything you'd need for serious outdoor pursuits-technical apparel, tents, sleeping bags, backpacks, the works. They've got this philosophy about "seeking wilder paths," which sounds like marketing speak but actually reflects how they approach design. Everything's built for durability and real-world performance, not Instagram aesthetics (though their stuff does photograph well in the mountains, let's be real).

One thing that sets them apart is their repair-over-replace mentality. They've got an in-house repair center staffed by people who've been fixing gear for decades-some since 2003. During the pandemic, they even converted their warranty department to make masks for the local community. That's the kind of thing that makes you think maybe they actually mean what they say about sustainability.

Notice how they're not trying to open stores on every corner? Mountain Hardwear primarily sells through specialty outdoor retailers and their website. You can find their gear at places like REI, Backcountry, and Dick's Sporting Goods. It's a different model than most brands-they'd rather be in shops where knowledgeable staff can actually talk about the technical specs than in some mall store where nobody knows the difference between down fill power ratings.

The pricing isn't cheap, but then again, you're paying for gear that's designed to keep you alive in extreme conditions. Their Ghost Whisperer jacket has become something of a cult classic in the ultralight community. And their tent designs? Let's just say there's a reason you see them at base camps around the world.
