Nashville fans, Yesterday, Major League Soccer officially announced a major evolution to its competition calendar, and a historic moment for the sport in the United States and Canada, one that will align MLS with the world’s top leagues and elevate the fan experience across North America. Beginning in July 2027, MLS will shift to a summer-to-spring season, with the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs and MLS Cup presented by Audi now taking place in May. Here’s what this means for our Nashville SC fanbase: - A Season That Follows The World’s Traditional Soccer Seasons
The regular season will begin in mid-July and run through April, with the playoffs in May, aligning with the rest of the world, and most of our country’s traditional soccer seasons. - A Mid-Winter Break
Similar to top international leagues, MLS will pause competition in mid-December and resume in February, with no matches in January. - Better Alignment With The Global Game
This change minimizes conflicts with FIFA international match windows and ensures that our top players can represent their countries without missing key MLS moments and games. This change will help B.J. Callaghan and the technical staff improve roster continuity and overall quality of play. - Smarter Transfer Windows
By syncing with the world’s primary transfer period, Mike Jacobs and his team will be able to build their rosters more effectively, integrating summer signings earlier, and operating more strategically in the global market. HOW WE GET THERE The 2026 season will remain in the same format as previous years with a break for the FIFA World Cup™. Then, before the transition, MLS will play a condensed 14-match season from February to May 2027, followed by the playoffs and MLS Cup presented by Audi. That campaign will determine qualification for the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, Leagues Cup, and Concacaf Champions Cup. This shift is one of the most significant in MLS history, and one that sets the stage for continued growth, higher-quality competition, and an even better fan experience here in Nashville and across our league. |
