There's something kind of fascinating about a brand that started because someone thought lingerie in the 1970s was either "Victorian or vulgar." That's Natori in a nutshell - born from the vision of Josie Natori, a former Wall Street VP who ditched investment banking to create something entirely different. And honestly? She nailed it.
Founded in 1977, Natori is an independent, family business that designs high-end women's fashion, including Intimates, Sleepwear, Lingerie, Ready-to-Wear, Legwear, Home, Fine Jewelry, Healthwear, and more. Using an East-meets-West aesthetic, founder Josie Natori has built a distinct lifestyle brand that reflects how a woman sees herself: feminine, strong, independent, and creative.
But here's where it gets interesting. This isn't just another lingerie company churning out basics. Natori is sold at Natori.com, and in premiere department stores around the world including Saks, Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdale's, Bergdorf Goodman, Harrod's, and hundreds of boutiques and specialty stores as well. That's some serious reach for a family-owned operation.
The brand's whole vibe centers on this East-meets-West thing, which makes sense given Josie's Filipino heritage. You'll see it in the silks, the embroideries, the way pieces feel both luxurious and wearable. They've expanded way beyond lingerie too - think home goods, jewelry, even scrubs for healthcare workers. It's basically become a lifestyle empire, though they'd probably say it more elegantly than that.
The boutique in NYC's NoLIta neighborhood is worth mentioning - it's their first standalone U.S. store, and it's designed to feel more like an art gallery than a shop. Everything's for sale, including the antiques on display. It's theatrical in the best way.
So yeah, if you're looking for intimates that don't feel like an afterthought, or loungewear that actually looks good, Natori's worth checking out. They've been doing this long enough to know what works, and they're still family-owned, which means they can take risks bigger corporations won't. That East-West aesthetic isn't just marketing speak - it's genuinely woven into everything they make.
