Editor's Take
Here's the thing about Naturalizer-they've been around since 1927, and there's a reason they're still standing. While most shoe brands were busy making pretty things that tortured women's feet, Naturalizer did something radical: they actually designed shoes for women's feet. Not men's feet scaled down. Not fashion-forward torture devices. Actual women's feet.
And honestly? That matters more than you'd think.
The brand's whole identity revolves around this N5 Contour technology thing, which basically means they've obsessed over fit to an almost neurotic degree. They offer sizes from 5M to 12XW-and everything in between. That's not just marketing speak. We're talking narrow, medium, wide, extra wide, and all those half sizes that other brands pretend don't exist. It's the kind of inclusive sizing that makes you wonder why every other shoe company hasn't figured this out yet.
But let's talk about what Naturalizer actually is today. They're owned by Caleres (formerly Brown Shoe Company), a massive footwear conglomerate that's been in the game since 1878. That corporate backing means Naturalizer has serious resources, but they've managed to keep that approachable, "we get it" vibe. Their shoes hit that sweet spot between office-appropriate and actually-want-to-wear-them. Think boots, heels, flats, sneakers, sandals-the whole lineup, but with cushioning that doesn't make you want to cry by 3 PM.
The price point sits comfortably in the mid-range. You're not dropping $400 on a pair of pumps, but you're also not shopping bargain-basement quality. Most styles hover between $80-$140, which feels reasonable when you consider you can actually walk in them. They run frequent sales too-like, constantly. Their clearance section is basically a treasure hunt if you're patient.
Shopping-wise, you've got options. They operate retail stores across the US and Canada (though they've scaled back from their peak of 195+ locations), plus their website ships internationally through a partnership with Global-E. Free shipping kicks in at $99, or you can join their Naturalizer Insider program for free shipping with no minimum. The Insider thing is actually worth it-you get a $10 off $50 certificate just for signing up, birthday perks, and early access to sales.
Returns are handled through Happy Returns, which has over 2,600 drop-off locations nationwide. You've got 45 days to return unworn shoes, and if you use a Return Bar location, it's free. Mail returns cost $7. That's pretty generous compared to the industry standard 30-day window.
One thing that's kind of fascinating: Naturalizer was literally the first brand ever to make a shoe specifically designed for women's feet back in the 1920s. That pioneering spirit still shows up in their current collections, especially their recent push into extended calf widths for boots. They're solving real problems-like the fact that not everyone has the same calf circumference-instead of just churning out trendy styles.
The brand's aesthetic leans classic with contemporary touches. You won't find avant-garde fashion statements here, but you will find that perfect black pump, those versatile ankle boots, or those everyday flats that somehow work with everything. It's the kind of footwear that makes getting dressed easier, not harder.
