Editor's Take

Here's the thing about NEMO Equipment-they're not your typical outdoor gear company churning out the same old tents and sleeping bags. Founded back in 2002 by Cam Brensinger after a miserable night on Mount Washington in a poorly designed bivy, this New Hampshire-based outfit has basically made it their mission to rethink everything about camping gear.

And they're doing it from a 200-year-old textile mill in Dover, New Hampshire. Four stories up, overlooking a river that'll take you straight to the ocean if you're feeling adventurous enough to kayak it. It's kind of perfect, actually-this blend of old New England grit and cutting-edge outdoor innovation.

What sets NEMO apart is their obsessive attention to design. We're talking about a team that does everything in-house: product design, engineering, development, even the studio photography. They've got this philosophy that nothing leaves their doors unless it's significantly better than what's already out there. Bold claim, sure, but when you look at their AirSupported Technology-using low-pressure airbeams instead of traditional tent poles-you start to see they're not just talking.

The company's grown to about 40-60 employees (depending on the season), and they've managed to stay relatively small while making a big impact. Their product line spans tents, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, backpacks, and camp furniture, all backed by a lifetime warranty. But here's where it gets interesting: they're pushing hard into sustainability with their Endless Promise collection-gear that's fully recyclable at the end of its life. Not just "eco-friendly" marketing speak, but actual take-it-back-and-recycle-it commitment.

NEMO's also won a steady stream of awards over the years. Industry folks know them for innovation, particularly in the backpacking and mountaineering space. Their Tensor sleeping pads and Dagger tents have become kind of legendary among serious outdoor enthusiasts. And they're not just selling to hardcore alpinists-they're trying to make outdoor adventure accessible to everyone, from first-time car campers to thru-hikers tackling the Appalachian Trail.

The company's revenue sits somewhere in the $5-7.5 million range, which for a specialty outdoor brand is pretty solid. They've raised about $11-21 million in funding over the years, with their most recent round in late 2023. But they're still privately held, still headquartered in that same Dover mill, still focused on building the best gear rather than just the biggest company.

What's cool is their commitment to the outdoor community beyond just selling stuff. They partner with organizations like the Appalachian Mountain Club, Backcountry Hunters & Anglers, and Camp Yoshi to promote inclusivity and conservation. They're also big on repairability-they'll fix your gear, sell you spare parts, and generally try to keep stuff out of landfills.

So yeah, NEMO's carved out this interesting niche where thoughtful design meets genuine outdoor passion. They're not the cheapest option out there, but if you're the type who appreciates when someone's really sweated the details on your camping setup, they're worth a look. Plus, that lifetime warranty means you're not just buying gear-you're kind of investing in it.
