Editor's Take

Here's the thing about New Balance-they're kind of having a moment right now, but it's not really a moment at all. It's more like a 119-year-long commitment to doing things their own way, and people are finally catching on.

Founded in 1906 as the New Balance Arch Support Company in Boston, Massachusetts, this brand has always been the quiet kid in class who ends up being way cooler than everyone thought. While other sneaker companies were chasing celebrity endorsements and flashy marketing campaigns, New Balance was over here perfecting the art of actually making shoes that fit real human feet. Revolutionary concept, right?

And here's where it gets interesting. New Balance maintains a manufacturing presence in the United States, as well as in the United Kingdom for the European market, where it produces some of its most popular models such as the 990 series-in contrast to its competitors, which often manufacture exclusively outside the United States and Europe. That's not just a fun fact to drop at parties-it's basically their whole identity. They're fiercely independent, still privately held, and totaled $6.5 billion in revenue in 2023.

But let's talk about what really matters: the shoes themselves. Notice how New Balance doesn't just make shoes in medium width? They actually acknowledge that human feet come in different shapes. Wild. The company differentiates its products with technical features, such as blended gel inserts, heel counters and a greater selection of sizes, particularly for very narrow or very wide widths. It's like they actually talked to people with feet before designing footwear.

The 990 series is basically legendary at this point. Designed in the early 80s to be the best running shoe on the market, four decades later the 990 is more popular than ever and widely regarded as both a first-class running shoe and a modern design classic. That's the kind of staying power most brands dream about.

And then there's the whole "dad shoe" renaissance. New Balance didn't create this trend-they just kept making the same quality shoes they always made, and suddenly everyone from fashion influencers to professional athletes wanted in. The chunky aesthetic that used to be mocked? Now it's everywhere. The brand went from "what my actual dad wears" to "what every cool person on Instagram wears" without really changing anything fundamental about their approach.

So yeah, New Balance isn't trying to be the loudest voice in the room. They're just consistently making quality athletic footwear and apparel, staying true to their Boston roots, and letting the products speak for themselves. Sometimes that's all it takes.
