Editor's Take

So here's the thing about NIC+ZOE-it's basically what happens when someone actually listens to what women want from their clothes. And I mean really listens.

Founded in 2006 by knitwear designer Dorian Lightbown, this Boston-based brand has a backstory that's kind of perfect. Dorian named the company after her two children, Nicholas and Zoë, as a reminder of the support they offered her during a pivotal time in her career. That detail alone tells you something about the brand's DNA-it's personal, it's family, it's real.

But what really sets NIC+ZOE apart is their obsession with knitwear. Not just any knitwear-the kind that actually moves with you, doesn't pill after three wears, and somehow manages to look polished without trying too hard. Founded in Boston in 2004, the brand is widely recognized for its knitwear, distinctive patterns, and sophisticated fits. Their customizable, versatile pieces are purposefully designed to help women feel just as good on the inside as they look on the outside.

The company's grown pretty strategically over the years. They're stocked in retailers such as Nordstrom, Bloomingdale's, and Stitch Fix, as well as in over 800 specialty stores across the U.S. Collections are also available at Nic+Zoe stores and NicandZoe.com. That's not small potatoes for a brand that started with sweaters.

And they're not sitting still. In 2022, they launched NZT, a t-shirt line. Coming off that success, they recently launched two new collections: NZ Denim and NZ Active, representing a continuation of the mission to provide women with stylish, elevated-yet-simple pieces for their everyday lives.

What I find interesting is their commitment to sustainability. They joined forces with thredUP to launch their resale shop, NIC+ZOE Re-Loved, where you can clear out your closet for credit to shop like-new styles. It's not just greenwashing-they're actually doing something about it.

The leadership story is worth noting too. In 2023, they promoted Avra Myers from president to CEO. Myers joined the Boston-based company as chief merchant in 2019 before assuming the role of president in 2021, and has overseen a surge in the core brand's growth. She's got serious retail chops-with 30 years of retail experience, Myers also co-founded clothing brand Club Monaco, where she worked as vice president of merchandising and new business development for twenty-three years.

The brand's philosophy is refreshingly straightforward. Founder Dorian Lightbown saw an overly structured uniformity of dress stifling active, busy women. Seeing the need for easy alternatives to take women from day to night and from work to weekend, she thoughtfully designed against the grain. Translation: clothes that don't make you think too hard in the morning but still make you look like you've got your life together.

They're also genuinely woman-led, which matters. They're a fiercely female-led company driven to elevate women, both in their organization and in the world, and they're proud to be one of the Top 100 Women-Led Businesses in Massachusetts.

The sizing is inclusive-they offer regular, petite, and plus sizes across most of their collections. And the price point sits in that sweet spot where you're getting quality without needing to take out a loan. Think elevated basics that'll last more than one season.

If you're the type who values versatility over trends, comfort over constriction, and actually wants to wear the same piece multiple ways without looking like you're repeating outfits-this brand gets it. They're not trying to reinvent fashion. They're just making clothes that work for actual human women with actual human lives.
