Editor's Take
So here's the thing about Nicks Boots-they're kind of a big deal in the Pacific Northwest boot world, and honestly, for good reason. Founded back in 1964 by a guy named Nikolai Blahuczyn (who went by "the Original Nick"), this Spokane-based operation has been cranking out some seriously tough handmade boots for six decades now. And when I say handmade, I mean actually handmade-not that mass-produced stuff that gets slapped with a "handcrafted" label for marketing purposes.
The story's pretty interesting, actually. Nick worked for White's Boots originally but decided he could build something better, so he started making boots in his basement. Fast forward to the early 1990s, and the wildland firefighting community discovered Nicks, and suddenly demand went through the roof. These days, the company's owned by Steve Mowe, with his son Shuyler running day-to-day operations since 2020.
What makes Nicks different? Well, they use this stitchdown construction method instead of the more common Goodyear welt. According to them, it's stronger-and watching their boots get put through hell by loggers, construction workers, and firefighters, you'd be hard-pressed to argue. They're also ridiculously selective about leather. While most bootmakers get 5-6 pairs out of a single hide, Nicks only gets 1.75-2 pairs because they're cherry-picking the absolute best sections. That's why their work boots use 7-8 ounce leather-roughly three times thicker than your average dress shoe.
But here's where it gets real: the break-in period is brutal. We're talking 80-120 hours of your feet basically screaming at you before these boots start to feel like heavy slippers. Multiple reviewers have mentioned this-one guy said it took him until May to break in boots he received in January. But once you're past that? People swear by them. There's this common refrain that keeps popping up in their store: "Thanks to Nicks, I can work again."
The customization options are insane, too. They offer widths from AA to FFFF (yes, four F's), and they've done some pretty remarkable custom work-boots for veterans with prosthetics, mismatched sizes for kids with Down syndrome, basically whatever it takes to get someone into properly fitting footwear. And because of that stitchdown construction, these boots can be resoled and rebuilt multiple times. Some customers have had the same pair for decades.
Now, they're not cheap. You're looking at $500-$700+ depending on what you order, and the lead times can stretch 18-35 weeks for custom builds. But when you consider that a pair of Nicks could outlast two or three pairs of other "quality" boots, the math starts making sense. Plus, they've got over 100 in-stock BuilderPros and Hot Shots ready to ship if you can't wait.
They've also branched out from pure work boots into heritage and casual styles-the Robert, the Americana, the Urban Logger-for people who want that Pacific Northwest boot aesthetic without quite as much overkill. Though let's be honest, even their "casual" boots are still built like tanks.
The company operates out of a single facility at 6510 E Sprague Ave in Spokane Valley, where about 61 employees handcraft every single pair. They're open Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 4 PM, and Saturdays 9:30 AM to 4 PM. And if you're serious about getting fitted properly, they really recommend coming in person or at least doing a remote consultation-because with boots this substantial and this expensive, you want to get the fit exactly right the first time.
