Editor's Take

Northern Tool + Equipment isn't your typical hardware store-it's basically the go-to destination for people who take their tools seriously. Founded back in 1981 by Don Kotula, who literally started selling log splitters out of his garage, this family-owned company has grown into something pretty impressive.

What makes Northern Tool different? They're not just retailers-they actually manufacture a bunch of their own stuff. Their private label brands like NorthStar, Powerhorse, and Klutch make up about 40% of their sales, which means you're getting direct-from-manufacturer pricing on quality equipment. And we're talking serious equipment here: generators, pressure washers, air compressors, welding gear, hydraulics-the kind of tools that professionals and serious DIYers actually depend on.

The company's grown from that single garage to over 120 stores across 23 states, plus they've got manufacturing facilities and distribution centers. They're particularly strong in the Midwest and Southeast, but they're expanding aggressively. CEO Suresh Krishna has ambitious plans to hit 300+ stores in the next decade.

Here's something interesting-they've managed to increase revenue by 40% and add 1.5 million new customers over the past couple years. Their product inventory has exploded from 40,000 items pre-Covid to over 100,000 items spanning 60 categories. That's a lot of variety for contractors, landscapers, mechanics, and weekend warriors.

The company also runs a "Tools for the Trades" program, donating professional-grade tools to high school trade programs. It's part of their mission to support the skilled trades workforce, which honestly feels pretty authentic given their roots.

One thing to note-customer service reviews are mixed. Some people love the prices and selection, others have had issues with returns and support. But for serious tools at competitive prices, especially their house brands, Northern Tool has carved out a solid niche in the market.
