Editor's Take

Here's the thing about NYX that most people don't realize-it basically invented the playbook for how beauty brands use social media. Like, way before everyone and their mother was doing Instagram tutorials, NYX was already knee-deep in YouTube partnerships back when vlogging was still kind of a weird hobby. Founded in Los Angeles by Toni Ko in 1999, the brand started with a simple but brilliant idea: make department store quality makeup at drugstore prices.

And that $1.99 price point for those first lip liners? They sold out in less than 30 days. Not exactly a slow burn.

But what really sets NYX apart isn't just the affordability thing-though let's be real, that matters. It's how they've managed to stay relevant in an industry that moves faster than you can say "new product launch." The brand has this uncanny ability to spot trends before they explode. Notice how they're always the first to have that viral TikTok shade everyone's suddenly obsessed with? That's not luck. The brand has amassed nearly one million followers on TikTok, and they actually listen to what people want.

The cruelty-free angle is another big deal. NYX Professional Makeup is certified and acknowledged by PETA as a cruelty-free brand since 2015, though they've never tested on animals since founding in 1999. And they're not just slapping a bunny logo on products and calling it a day-they've got an expanding range of vegan formulas that actually perform.

What's kind of fascinating is how NYX operates now as part of L'Oréal (they were acquired in 2014 for a cool $500 million), but they've managed to keep that indie, accessible vibe. You can find their stuff everywhere-in over 70 countries at thousands of retailers, from Ulta to Target to their own website. That distribution strategy is genius, honestly. You're never more than a quick trip away from grabbing that Butter Gloss everyone won't shut up about.

The product range has exploded way beyond those original lip liners. We're talking foundations in seemingly endless shades, eyeshadow palettes that rival luxury brands, setting sprays that makeup artists actually use on real jobs. And somehow they've managed to keep most products under $15. In an era when a single lipstick can cost $40, that's not nothing.

So yeah, NYX isn't just another makeup brand cluttering up your bathroom counter. It's basically the blueprint for how to do affordable, quality cosmetics in the social media age-with a side of actual values that matter to people.
