Returns

What is the return window?
Office Depot's return policy allows customers to return most items within 90 days of purchase. Electronics and furniture have a 14-day return period.

Do I need a receipt to return an item?
Office Depot's policy requires proof of purchase for a cash or card refund. If you don't have a receipt but the purchase can be verified (for example, if you used your Office Depot Rewards number or a credit card that can be looked up), the store may allow the return for store credit at the item's lowest price in the last 90 days. They also require a photo ID for returns without a receipt, and returns without a receipt are at the store manager's discretion.

Are there any items that are non-returnable?
Personal protective equipment (PPE) and certain cleaning and breakroom supplies (e.g., face masks, sanitizers, food/drink items) are generally not returnable for health/safety reasons. Downloadable software is non-refundable or non-returnable.

How will I receive my refund?
Refunds are processed to the original payment method or as a Return Card if no receipt is provided. Refunds typically appear within 3-5 business days, but may take longer for checks or Return Cards.

Can I return online purchases in-store?
You can also return most online purchases to a local store with the packing slip. Whether you bought an item in a shop or online, you can return it to any of the 1000+ Office Depot stores.

Editor's Take

Office Depot's been through quite the journey lately, and honestly? It's kind of fascinating to watch a retail giant adapt in real time. The company's still very much in business as we move into mid-2025, operating over 1,300 stores worldwide, but they're definitely not the same Office Depot your parents knew.

Here's the thing-between early 2018 and the end of 2021, Office Depot and OfficeMax shut down well over 100 locations, and the closures aren't stopping in 2025 either. But before you start thinking this is some kind of retail apocalypse story, it's actually more strategic than that. This downsizing isn't random-they look at where business has dropped off and trim stores that don't make enough money to justify staying open.

The remote work revolution really shook things up for them. With more people working from anywhere but an office, the demand for traditional office supplies-think big glass-top desks and multi-thousand-sheet printers-has fallen. So what's a company to do? They pivot.

Office Depot operates 922 retail stores in the United States under the Office Depot and OfficeMax brands, as well as e-commerce sites and a business-to-business sales organization. And they're getting creative with partnerships too-they recently announced a new agreement with Verizon for select retail locations, launching in California and Illinois.

The numbers tell a story of transformation rather than decline. The company has combined annual sales of approximately $7 billion and employs about 45,000 people in the United States. Not exactly small potatoes.

Sure, you'll see fewer big-box stores, more activity online, and tighter focus on the kind of high-value, repeat customers that help keep the lights on. But that's not necessarily a bad thing-it's evolution. And for now, if you need office supplies in a pinch, they're still very much an option.
