Here's the thing about On Running-it's one of those brands that kind of came out of nowhere and suddenly everyone's wearing those shoes with the weird cloud pods on the bottom. And honestly? There's a reason for that.
The company started in Switzerland back in 2010, which feels both recent and like forever ago in sneaker years. Three friends-former pro athlete Olivier Bernhard and his buddies David Allemann and Caspar Coppetti-basically decided traditional running shoes weren't cutting it. So they invented CloudTec, this cushioning system that's supposed to give you a soft landing but an explosive takeoff. It's patented tech, and when you see those hollow pods on the sole, you know exactly what brand you're looking at.
But On isn't just about the technology. They've managed to do something tricky: make performance running shoes that people actually want to wear when they're not running. You'll see them at coffee shops as much as you will on trails. That crossover appeal is huge. The shoes work for serious marathoners (they've got Olympic athletes wearing them) and for someone who just wants comfortable kicks that look clean.
The growth has been pretty wild. In 2019, the company held 40% of the running shoe market in Switzerland and 10% in Germany. As of 2020, On products were sold in 6,000 retailers in 55 countries; the United States was its biggest single market, where it accounted for 6.6% of the performance running shoe category. That's not nothing for a brand that's barely over a decade old.
Roger Federer became a shareholder in November 2019, which gave them serious credibility and visibility. They even created a lifestyle shoe line called "The Roger" with him. And they're not stopping at running-they've expanded into tennis, training, and all-day wear.
The company went public on the New York Stock Exchange in 2021, trading under the ticker ONON. Their headquarters are in Zurich, with major offices in Portland, Oregon (their Americas headquarters), Berlin, Tokyo, Shanghai, and beyond. They've got innovation labs, retail stores popping up in major cities, and they're constantly pushing new tech.
One thing that stands out is their focus on sustainability. They're working on reducing their environmental footprint through things like their Cyclon subscription service (a circular running shoe you return when worn out) and minimizing waste in manufacturing. It's not just marketing fluff-they're actually investing in it.
The retail experience is pretty thoughtful too. Their stores feature something called the Magic Wall-a signature aspect that innovates the traditional retail experience by giving shoppers an immediate try-on. The Magic Wall features hidden drawers with a full-size run of On's latest footwear. It's a small detail, but it makes shopping feel less like a chore.
So yeah, On Running has basically carved out this sweet spot between serious performance gear and lifestyle fashion. They're Swiss-engineered, athlete-tested, and somehow still approachable enough that regular people feel good wearing them. That balance is what's driving their momentum.
