Editor's Take

So here's the thing about O'Neill-it's basically the granddaddy of surf culture, and I mean that in the best way possible. Back in 1952, a guy named Jack O'Neill took his unstoppable passion for surfing and used it to battle the elements, which sounds dramatic but honestly? That's exactly what happened.

Picture this: Northern California, freezing cold water, and surfers who could barely last an hour before hypothermia kicked in. Jack O'Neill was one of the originators of the use of neoprene for wetsuits, and that single innovation basically changed everything. Like, the entire surf industry exists because this dude wanted to stay in the water longer. From the invention of the first neoprene wetsuit, first surf shop, first stitch-less boardshort, O'Neill continues its commitment to being a leading youth lifestyle brand.

And notice how they're not just resting on their laurels from the 1950s. The brand's still pushing boundaries with stuff like the Hyperfreak and Superfreak boardshorts-names that sound like they came from a comic book but are actually legit performance gear. They've got this whole "First Name In The Water" tagline, which is kind of perfect because, well, they literally were.

What's interesting is how O'Neill has evolved beyond just wetsuits. O'Neill was a pioneering retailer of surfwear and also sells lifestyle apparel and snow sports-related apparel. So you've got everything from boardshorts to snow gear, which makes sense when you think about it-both involve cold conditions and people doing slightly crazy things for fun.

The company's got a pretty fascinating structure too. In the United States, the O'Neill clothing license has been held by the La Jolla Group since 1993, and the company is now headquartered in Irvine, California. Meanwhile, the O'Neill wetsuit business remains in the ownership of the O'Neill family, with its headquarters in Santa Cruz. It's like the brand split into two siblings who both kept the family name.

Here's something you might not know: Products are distributed to 86 countries, some by licensed distributors. That's a massive global footprint for a brand that started in a San Francisco garage. And they're not just about selling stuff-the O'Neill Sea Odyssey, established by Jack O'Neill in 1996, is a free program to strengthen mostly disadvantaged children's connection to the environment, which is pretty cool.

The brand's got this authentic California surf vibe that you can't really fake. When you see their gear, you're not just buying clothes-you're buying into 70+ years of surf history and innovation. And honestly? In a world full of brands trying to manufacture authenticity, O'Neill's got the real deal.
