Editor's Take

So here's the thing about OnePlus-it's kind of the tech world's ultimate underdog story, except they're not really underdogs anymore. Started back in 2013 by Pete Lau and Carl Pei, the company basically said "what if we made flagship phones that don't cost a mortgage payment?" And honestly? They nailed it.

The whole "Never Settle" mantra isn't just marketing fluff. It's baked into everything they do. When the OnePlus One dropped in 2014, people were skeptical. A premium phone at mid-range prices? Running CyanogenMod? Sold through an invite-only system? It sounded like a recipe for disaster. But that invite system-which seemed annoying at first-actually created this massive community buzz. People wanted what they couldn't easily have.

Fast forward to today, and OnePlus has evolved way beyond just phones. They're pushing out tablets, smartwatches, earbuds, even TVs in some markets. The OnePlus 13 and 15 series pack Snapdragon 8 Elite processors with AI features that actually feel useful rather than gimmicky. We're talking 4500 nits peak brightness on displays, 100W SUPERVOOC charging that gets you from dead to full faster than you can finish lunch, and camera systems co-developed with Hasselblad that produce genuinely impressive shots.

But what really sets them apart is how they've maintained that community-first approach. They actually listen to user feedback-like, really listen. When people complained about Facebook bloatware, they addressed it. When users wanted better cooling systems for gaming, boom-dual-layer graphite cooling chambers appeared. The OxygenOS interface stays clean and fast, which is refreshing when so many Android skins feel bloated.

The pricing strategy has shifted over the years, sure. They're not the budget flagship killer they once were-the OnePlus Open foldable hits $1,699. But even at higher price points, you're getting tech that competes directly with Samsung and Apple flagships while still saving a few hundred bucks. And they've smartly kept the Nord line for people who want that OnePlus experience without the premium price tag.

What's interesting is how they've expanded globally while staying true to their roots. They've got a presence across North America, Europe, and Asia, with over 3,000 employees working on everything from hardware to software optimization. The partnership with Oppo (their parent company) gives them manufacturing muscle, but they've kept their distinct identity.

The company's also gotten serious about ecosystem building. Their watches now hit 100 hours of battery life in smart mode-compare that to Apple Watch's 18 hours. The Buds Pro 3 compete directly with AirPods Pro. And everything works together seamlessly if you're in the OnePlus universe.
