Editor's Take
So here's the thing about OtterBox - they basically wrote the book on keeping your phone alive. And I mean that literally, because before they came along in 1998, most of us were just crossing our fingers every time we dropped our phones.
The company started in a garage in Fort Collins, Colorado, which feels almost too perfect for a tech success story. Since 1998 OtterBox has grown from our founder's garage in Colorado into a family-led, global brand synonymous with quality. But what's kind of fascinating is that they didn't even start with phone cases. The company was founded in 1998 as a manufacturer of water-resistant boxes meant to house electronic devices, mostly catering to outdoor enthusiasts. Since then, OtterBox has produced both water-resistant and non-water-resistant protective phone cases for smartphones.
These days, OtterBox isn't just about those chunky Defender cases your dad probably has on his phone. They've expanded into screen protectors, power banks, charging cables, and even coolers and tumblers. In May 2017, OtterBox announced a new product line, a line of coolers and tumblers called Venture Coolers. In 2020, OtterBox launched power banks, charging kits, and cables that work with both Apple and Android products. The brand has basically become synonymous with protection - not just for phones, but for your whole mobile lifestyle.
What really sets them apart is their warranty program. Most companies make you jump through hoops, but OtterBox actually stands behind their products with what they call the OtterBox Protection Program. And they're not messing around with compatibility either - as of 2024, OtterBox provides cases for products by Amazon, Apple, BlackBerry, Google (Pixel), HTC, LG, Microsoft, Motorola, Nokia, OnePlus, and Samsung.
The company's also got this whole philanthropic angle through the OtterCares Foundation, which is pretty cool. They're not just about making money - they're investing in education and inspiring kids to be entrepreneurial. It's that kind of values-driven approach that probably explains why they've managed to stay family-led even as they've grown into a global brand.
Notice how they've managed to stay relevant too? While other accessory brands come and go, OtterBox keeps evolving. They acquired LifeProof back in 2013, branched into gaming accessories in 2021, and they're constantly updating their product lines to match whatever new phone just dropped. That's the kind of adaptability that keeps a brand alive for over 25 years.
