You know what's kind of fascinating about Pep Boys? They're basically the granddaddies of the automotive aftermarket-and I mean that in the best possible way. Founded back in 1921 by four Navy buddies who chipped in $200 each, these guys literally helped invent what we now call the car parts business. They even got their name from spotting a shipment of "Pep Valve grinding compound" on their shelves-talk about serendipity.
But here's what really gets me: they've got over 900 locations in 35 states and Puerto Rico, which means you're probably never too far from one when your car decides to throw a tantrum. And trust me, cars always seem to break down at the most inconvenient times. With 8,000 service bays nationwide, they're not just selling you parts-they'll actually fix your ride too.
The whole "Manny, Moe & Jack" thing isn't just marketing fluff either. The story goes that one of the founders saw a California dress shop called "Minnie, Maude and Mabel's" and thought using first names was genius. So they officially became "The Pep Boys - Manny, Moe & Jack." Pretty clever for 1920s branding, honestly.
What's really interesting is how they've evolved. They offer everything from tire services to oil changes, with all the modern conveniences like online scheduling and ASE-certified technicians. Every oil change includes a free tire rotation and pressure check-which is actually a pretty solid deal when you think about it.
And here's something that caught my attention: they've got these Pep Boys Mobile Crew vehicles that come to you for fleet maintenance. So if you're running a business with multiple vehicles, they'll literally show up at your location. That's the kind of service evolution that keeps a century-old company relevant.
The numbers are pretty impressive too. They're pulling in around $5 billion in annual revenue, which tells you people are still very much in need of what they're selling. With over 4,500 certified technicians, they're not just parts pushers-they're actually fixing cars at scale.
