Editor's Take
You know, when most people hear "Perdue," they immediately think of that yellow chicken package in the grocery store. But here's the thing-Perdue Farms is actually way more fascinating than just poultry. Perdue Farms has 2021 annual sales of $8 billion. That's not small potatoes (or should I say, small chickens?).
What really gets me is how this company started. The company was founded in 1920 by Arthur Perdue with his wife, Pearl Perdue, who had been keeping a small flock of chickens. The company started out selling table eggs, then in 1925, Perdue built the company's first hatchery, and switched to selling layer chicks to farmers instead of eggs. From backyard chickens to an $8 billion empire-that's the kind of American dream story you don't hear much anymore.
But here's where it gets interesting. We're a family of family-owned companies. And we're here to provide innovative food and agricultural products and services that make people's lives better. They're not just about chicken anymore. The company has two major divisions that most people don't even know about.
In 2013, Perdue was reportedly the third-largest American producer of broilers (chickens for eating) and was estimated as having 7% of the US chicken production market, behind Pilgrim's Pride and Tyson Foods. So yeah, they're still huge in chicken, but they've diversified like crazy.
And get this-they're really leaning into the sustainability angle. Each order supports: Our family of farmers, who preserve land through sustainable farming practices. GREEN FARMING · Each order includes: A seed packet that you can use to grow a pollinator habitat in your area. PROTECTING POLLINATORS · Each order is packed in: A recyclable box that includes a recyclable grocery tote. I mean, when's the last time you got a seed packet with your meat order?
The family aspect is pretty remarkable too. Our company has remained family-owned and operated since 1920, and we're committed to keeping Perdue Farms a family-owned business. In an era where everything gets bought out by massive conglomerates, that's actually kind of refreshing.
What strikes me most is their approach to growth. Our path forward is about getting better, not just bigger. That's a philosophy you don't hear much in corporate America these days. Most companies are obsessed with scale at any cost, but Perdue seems to be taking a more thoughtful approach.
