Editor's Take

There's something almost mystical about slipping on a pair of Persol sunglasses for the first time. It's like-well, imagine if Italian craftsmanship had a baby with Hollywood glamour, and that baby grew up to become the coolest person at every party.

Founded back in 1917 by Giuseppe Ratti, Persol started with a pretty specific mission: making eyewear tough enough for pilots and race car drivers. The name literally means "for the sun" in Italian, which is kind of perfect when you think about it. But here's what's wild-every single frame is still made in Italy, still by hand. In 2025, when everything seems mass-produced in some distant factory, that's basically revolutionary.

You know that silver arrow detail on the temples? That's their trademark, and it's not just decoration. They developed this flexible stem system called Meflecto-one of the first spring hinges for eyewear. So when you're constantly taking your glasses on and off (guilty as charged), they actually bend with you instead of breaking.

The Steve McQueen connection isn't just marketing fluff, either. The legendary 714 model became iconic partly because of him, but also because it's just ridiculously well-made. They use acetate from cotton with powdery pigments, creating color variations that are unique for each frame. That means your tortoiseshell Persols won't look exactly like anyone else's-kind of like eyewear fingerprints.

And the lenses? Crystal lenses born from molten crystal that separates, spins, ripples, and refines, using precious optical materials for the best protection and visual clarity. It sounds almost poetic, but it translates to seriously superior optics.

Now owned by the Luxottica group, Persol has managed to keep its soul intact while expanding globally. They hit the US market in 1962 and opened their first Rodeo Drive boutique in 1991. But honestly? The magic is still in that Italian workshop where artisans shape each frame with the same attention to detail their predecessors did over a century ago.
