Returns

What is the return window?
Receipts are valid for 60 days from date of purchase. You get a full two months (60 days, to be exact) from the day you bought an item to return it.

Do I need a receipt to return an item?
You'll need your receipt or other proof of purchase in order to get a refund back to your payment method. You can actually still return certain items to PetSmart if you lost your receipt or if it's been more than 60 days. Just bring the item and your photo ID to a PetSmart store. You'll get a merchandise return card for the most recent sale price of the item.

Are there any items that are non-returnable?
We do not accept returns or exchanges on prescription medication products. Similar to a rule in Petco's return policy, prescription pet meds aren't eligible for returns at PetSmart, either. If you have an issue with a prescription medication, call their Customer Service team at 1-888-839-9638.

How will I receive my refund?
If a purchase is paid with cash, a refund will be issued in cash. If paid for by credit card, the card used to purchase the merchandise is required so that your return can be credited to the same card. If you do not have the same credit card or used a payment method other than a credit card, you'll receive a merchandise return card for the appropriate amount. Merchandise return cards can be used for future in-store purchases and cannot be redeemed for cash.

Can I return online purchases in-store?
If you're not satisfied with your petsmart.com purchase, you can return the product in-store for free for the purchase price (minus shipping, delivery fees, gift wrap and other charges). To return an item in-store that was purchased at petsmart.com, on the PetSmart app, or on a delivery provider's app, simply bring the product in its original packaging with the order confirmation as proof of purchase to any PetSmart store.

Editor's Take

You know, there's something kind of fascinating about PetSmart that goes way beyond just being another big-box retailer. It's actually the leading North American pet company, but what really gets me is how they've managed to become this weird intersection of commerce and genuine pet love.

With more than 1,650 stores across the US and Canada, they're basically everywhere-and honestly, that's not always a good thing with retail chains. But here's where PetSmart gets interesting: they've helped 11 million pets find loving homes through their adoption programs since 1994. That's not just a number you throw around lightly.

The whole operation started pretty humbly too. Founded in 1986 by Jim and Janice Dougherty, they opened their first two stores in 1987 in Phoenix as "PetFood Warehouse"-basically warehouse stores selling pet food in bulk at discount prices. Fast forward to today, and they're selling everything from pet food and supplies to offering grooming, dog daycare, boarding, and veterinary care through third-party clinics.

But here's what really strikes me about the place-it's this strange balance between being a massive corporate entity and actually caring about pets. Since 1994, they've supported nonprofits with over $600 million in grant funds. And they partner with shelters to help more than 400,000 pets find homes each year. That's... actually pretty impressive for a company that could easily just focus on selling stuff.

The business model is smart, though. They offer quality pet products, pet food, and accessories, plus services like grooming, dog training, and boarding. It's that one-stop-shop approach that keeps people coming back. And with "When it comes to pets, we're truly obsessed" as their tagline, they're at least being honest about their brand positioning.

What's also interesting is how they've weathered competition. By the mid to late 2000s, they were facing significant competition from Amazon, Walmart, and Target, but they've managed to stay relevant by doubling down on services and the in-store experience. You can't exactly get your dog groomed on Amazon, after all.
