Editor's Take
So here's the thing about the Philadelphia Union-they're basically the scrappy underdog story that MLS needed, even if nobody knew it at the time. Founded in 2008 and kicking off their first season in 2010, they've become this fascinating case study in how to build a soccer club the right way, even when you're doing it in Chester, Pennsylvania, of all places.
The Union play at Subaru Park, and honestly, it's one of those venues that just works. The compact, 18,500-seat stadium was designed to put fans close to the action, with excellent sightlines and an intimate bowl that helps amplify matchday noise, particularly from the River End where the Sons of Ben supporters gather. And speaking of the Sons of Ben-these folks were lobbying for an MLS team before the Union even existed. They literally willed this club into existence starting in 2007, which is kind of wild when you think about it.
But what really sets the Union apart is their academy system. Like, they're not just developing players-they're producing legitimate talent that's making waves internationally. The club has this whole philosophy about building from within, and it's actually working. They clinched their first-ever trophy in 2020 by winning the Supporters' Shield, awarded to the team with the best regular-season record. Not bad for a team that finished 14th in their inaugural season.
The stadium itself sits right on the Delaware River waterfront, next to the Commodore Barry Bridge, which gives it this pretty spectacular backdrop. With Subaru's long history of environmentalism and zero-landfill expertise, along with the Philadelphia Union's innovative, forward-thinking initiatives, we have helped make Subaru Park the first zero-landfill stadium in Major League Soccer. In fact, Subaru Park has diverted over 1.2 million pounds of waste from landfills. That's not nothing.
What's interesting is how the Union have carved out their identity in a city dominated by the Eagles, Phillies, Sixers, and Flyers. They've done it by being authentic, by investing in youth development, and by creating this genuine connection with their community. The navy blue and gold colors represent the Continental Army's uniforms during the Revolutionary War, which is very on-brand for Philadelphia.
The matchday experience is pretty solid too. You've got your traditional Philly food-cheesesteaks, hoagies, soft pretzels shaped like the Union logo-plus local beers from Victory and Dogfish Head. And getting there is actually easier than you'd think, with SEPTA running free shuttles from the Chester Transportation Center on game days.
Here's what doesn't get talked about enough: the Union are quietly building something sustainable. They're not chasing big-name DPs or trying to be the flashiest team in the league. They're developing 14-year-olds who might become the next big thing. They're creating a culture. They're making soccer matter in a city that's historically been pretty lukewarm about the sport. And somehow, it's working.
