Editor's Take

You know those teardrop-eyed figurines that somehow ended up in every grandmother's china cabinet? That's Precious Moments-and honestly, there's way more to this story than you'd expect.

The whole thing started back in 1978 when artist Samuel J. Butcher launched the "Original 21" figurines, basically creating what would become the world's most recognized inspirational brand. But here's what gets interesting-those original 21 pieces? They were released to worldwide acclaim and kickstarted a whole new era of collecting. Today, "Love One Another" is the only design from the original 21 still in production, making the rest collector gold.

And we're talking serious collector gold. Some of those original pieces can fetch anywhere from $500 to $1,000, especially if they're signed by Butcher himself. Here's a pro tip from collectors: figurines with multiple figures on the base are worth more than solo characters.

The brand's reach is pretty wild when you think about it. They've expanded into co-branded merchandise with carefully selected brands that align with their goals, including Disney collaborations that bring those iconic teardrop eyes to Mickey Mouse and friends. The figurine line has produced well over 2,500 different pieces since launching.

But the real heart of Precious Moments isn't just the collectibles-it's the Chapel in Carthage, Missouri. Often described as "America's Sistine Chapel," this place draws around 100,000 visitors annually to see Butcher's biblical artwork painted on the walls. Tours are completely free, which is pretty remarkable for a major attraction.

The company's mission has stayed consistent through all the decades: "make the world a better place by helping people Share The Gift Of Love through high quality gifts and collectible treasures." Whether that resonates with you or not, you've got to respect the staying power-and the fact that their widespread appeal ties to themes of "kindness and love and understanding" that most people want to promote.

So yeah, those little figurines your aunt collects? They're part of a pretty fascinating cultural phenomenon that's been going strong for nearly five decades.
