Editor's Take

You know, there's something refreshingly honest about rag & bone that sets it apart from the usual fashion noise. Founded in 2002 by Marcus Wainwright and Nathan Bogle, this isn't your typical overnight success story-it's more like watching craftspeople who actually give a damn about what they're making.

The whole thing started with a pretty simple premise: create beautifully constructed clothes using time-honored techniques from supremely skilled, local manufacturers at some of the oldest factories in the country. And honestly? That philosophy still drives everything they do today. It's that rare brand that manages to feel both downtown-cool and genuinely substantial.

What's fascinating is how they've managed to stay true to their roots while expanding globally. They now operate 35 stores worldwide, with ten just in New York City alone, plus locations spanning from Washington D.C. to Tokyo. But here's the thing-walk into any of their stores and you'll still feel that original New York energy.

The brand really hit its stride when it started blending New York style with British tailoring. It's this interesting cultural mashup that somehow works perfectly. Think downtown sensibility meets proper craftsmanship, without any of the pretension you might expect.

In April 2024, Guess Inc. and WHP Global completed the acquisition of the brand, which had some people worried about losing that authentic edge. But so far, the core philosophy seems intact. The importance of quality, expert craftsmanship, and attention to detail still resonates deeply, informing the brand's core philosophy.

Their denim game is particularly strong-they launched footwear in 2008 with help from Tull Price, and their footwear line includes the popular Newbury boot. But really, it's the whole ecosystem that works: jeans, ready-to-wear, accessories, and footwear that all feel like they belong together.

What I find most compelling is their commitment to American manufacturing. In an industry that's constantly chasing cheaper production overseas, rag & bone has stuck with domestic factories and traditional techniques. It's not just marketing speak-you can actually feel the difference in the construction and materials.

The brand's had its share of high-profile moments too, from Kate Moss starring in their first advertising campaign to Michael Pitt fronting their men's campaigns. But these collaborations never felt forced or desperate for attention-more like natural extensions of the brand's aesthetic.

Sure, you'll pay a premium for rag & bone pieces, but there's something to be said for clothes that are built to last more than a season or two. In a world of fast fashion and disposable trends, that kind of durability feels almost radical.
