Editor's Take

There's something kind of remarkable about a company that's been making boots in the same Minnesota town since 1905. Red Wing Shoes isn't just another footwear brand-it's basically become synonymous with the idea that boots should outlast the person wearing them.

Here's the thing about Red Wing: they're still handcrafting boots in their Red Wing, Minnesota factory, using techniques that would look familiar to workers from a century ago. We're talking about over 230 individual steps to build each pair of boots by hand. That's not marketing fluff-it's actually how they do it. The company operates manufacturing facilities in Red Wing and Potosi, Missouri, and they even own their own leather tannery, the S.B. Foot Tanning Company, which supplies premium leather not just for their boots but for furniture and other applications too.

But Red Wing isn't stuck in the past. They've got this dual identity thing going on that actually works. On one side, you've got the work boots-the steel-toe, safety-rated, slip-resistant boots that construction workers, miners, and oil field workers depend on. These boots meet ASTM safety standards and are distributed to over 4,000 U.S. retail locations and more than 110 countries worldwide. On the other side, there's Red Wing Heritage, which launched in 2008 and turned those classic work boot designs into lifestyle footwear that people wear to coffee shops and concerts.

The Heritage line is where things get interesting for the fashion-conscious crowd. Styles like the Iron Ranger and the Moc Toe have become icons in the boot world, with their Goodyear welt construction and full-grain leather that actually looks better as it ages. And here's a detail that matters: these boots are resoleable. In a world where most footwear ends up in a landfill after a year or two, Red Wing builds boots that can be repaired and rebuilt, potentially lasting decades.

The company's reach is pretty impressive when you dig into it. They've got over 2,100 employees, and their distribution network includes not just traditional retail stores but also mobile stores-basically trucks that bring boots directly to job sites. For businesses, they offer Red Wing For Business, a program that helps companies outfit their workers with safety footwear through various purchasing options.

What's maybe most telling about Red Wing is their commitment to the community. They're still privately held, still headquartered in that small Minnesota river town, and they even own and operate the historic St. James Hotel in Red Wing as part of their community investment. That's not something you see from most footwear companies.

So whether you're looking for boots that'll protect your feet on a construction site or heritage boots that'll develop character over years of wear, Red Wing's got options. Just know that quality like this doesn't come cheap-but then again, when you're buying boots that might outlast your car, maybe that's not such a bad investment.
