Editor's Take
So here's the thing about Rockport-they basically invented the idea that dress shoes don't have to feel like medieval torture devices. Back in 1971, a father-son duo named Saul and Bruce Katz looked at the shoe industry and thought, "Why can't we put athletic shoe technology into regular shoes?" And honestly? Game changer.
Founded in Marlborough, Massachusetts, in 1971 by Saul L. Katz and his son, Bruce R. Katz, the company marketed walking as a healthy alternative to running. But they didn't just talk about it. In 1990, Rockport Vice President Tony Post ran the New York City marathon wearing DressSports shoes-you know, to prove a point. That's commitment.
The brand's been through some changes over the years. The Rockport Group is an American shoe brand owned by Authentic Brands Group. In 2023 the Rockport Group was acquired by Authentic Brands Group. Despite the ownership shifts, they've stayed true to their Massachusetts roots, with headquarters at 1220 Washington Street in Newton, Massachusetts.
What makes Rockport different is their obsession with biomechanics. Rockport invested in research into the biomechanics of walking to design its shoes. They're not just slapping cushions in shoes and calling it a day-they're actually engineering comfort from the ground up. Their Total Motion and truTECH technologies aren't marketing fluff; they're legitimate attempts to make shoes that work with your feet instead of against them.
And the range? Pretty impressive. Including shoes, boots, loafers, heels & sneakers in casual and dress styles. Whether you need something for the office, a wedding, or just walking around the city all day, they've got options. The men's line is particularly strong-always has been-though they've been working on expanding their women's offerings.
One cool detail: Rockport's first product was the Country Walker, introduced in 1973. That walking shoe DNA is still in everything they make. You can find their shoes at major retailers like Nordstrom, Macy's, and DSW, plus they have outlet stores scattered across the country if you're hunting for deals.
