So here's the thing about Rodd & Gunn - they're basically what happens when New Zealand decides to make menswear that doesn't try too hard. Founded way back in 1946, this brand has been quietly doing its thing for nearly 80 years, which is kind of remarkable when you think about how many fashion labels flame out after a season or two.
The whole vibe is "relaxed but put-together," if that makes sense. Think Italian fabrics meeting Kiwi sensibility. They're obsessed with natural materials - linens, cottons, wools, leathers - the kind of stuff that actually breathes and ages well instead of falling apart after three washes. And they back it up with a 2-year guarantee on everything, which is pretty bold in an era where most clothes are basically disposable.
What's interesting is how they've grown. Started in New Zealand, obviously, but now they've got over 240 stores scattered across both hemispheres. You'll find them in shopping centers from Palo Alto to Melbourne, plus they've been aggressively expanding in the UK with plans for 40 new stores. They even outfit themselves as "lodges" instead of just stores, which tells you something about the aesthetic they're going for.
The product range is exactly what you'd expect from a heritage menswear brand - shirts that actually fit, jeans that don't look like you're trying to relive your youth, quality knitwear, Italian leather shoes. Nothing groundbreaking, but that's kind of the point. These are the pieces you reach for when you want to look decent without overthinking it. Notice how they emphasize "timeless" over trendy? That's intentional. They're not chasing whatever's hot on TikTok this week.
Here's what sets them apart, though: they've managed to scale globally without losing that original DNA. Whether you're shopping in Brooklyn or Auckland, you're getting the same commitment to natural fabrics and traditional construction methods. They source premium materials - Supima cotton, Italian-woven fabrics, quality leathers - and actually care about where stuff comes from.
The price point reflects all this, obviously. You're not getting fast fashion prices, but you're also not paying luxury brand markups just for a logo. It's that sweet spot where quality meets reasonable longevity. And with free shipping in the US and a pretty straightforward 30-day return policy, they've figured out the e-commerce game too.
One quirky detail: they've recently gotten into wine. Yes, wine. Because apparently when you're a New Zealand lifestyle brand, eventually you start making Pinot Noir. It's available at their "Lodge Bar" locations, which is either brilliant brand extension or completely random, depending on your perspective.
