Here's the thing about Room & Board that most people don't realize until they actually step into one of their stores or start browsing online - this isn't your typical furniture retailer trying to push whatever's trendy this season. Founded back in 1980, they've basically built their entire business model around a pretty radical idea: what if furniture was actually made to last?
And I mean really last. Like, pass-it-down-to-your-kids kind of last.
The numbers tell part of the story. More than 90% of their furniture is made in America by small family-owned manufacturers and craftspeople. Since the company started, they've worked with over 15,000 American artisans. That's not just a marketing line - it's actually how they operate. Instead of chasing the cheapest production costs overseas, they partner with woodworkers and furniture makers across the country who know their craft inside and out.
But here's where it gets interesting. Room & Board is 100% employee-owned. Every single person working there, from the delivery drivers to the designers to the folks at headquarters in Minneapolis, has a stake in the company through their Employee Stock Ownership Plan. It's the kind of setup that changes how a business operates because everyone's actually invested in doing things right.
The furniture itself follows a modern aesthetic - clean lines, timeless designs that won't look dated in five years. They pull inspiration from mid-century modern, Scandinavian, Japanese, and even Shaker styles, but everything gets filtered through this lens of "will this still look good in a decade?" Their Metro sofa has been a bestseller for years because it's just... solid. Not flashy, not trying too hard, just well-made furniture that works.
What really sets them apart is the service side. Free design consultations, whether you visit a store or hop on a video call. Full-service delivery where the team actually assembles everything and hauls away the packaging. And get this - they offer free 90-day returns and exchanges, even on custom pieces made specifically for you. No cancellation fees either. In an industry where "all sales final" is pretty common for custom orders, that's kind of remarkable.
They're also a Certified B Corporation, which means they've committed to meeting rigorous standards for social and environmental performance. Their sustainability efforts aren't just window dressing - they've been fundamental to how they operate since day one. They work with the Urban Wood Project to reclaim wood that would otherwise end up in landfills, and they're constantly pushing to reduce waste across their supply chain.
Room & Board operates 19 stores across the United States, plus a robust e-commerce site and a business interiors division. Whether you're furnishing a studio apartment or outfitting an entire office, they've got the range to handle it. And with their price guarantee - same prices whether you shop online, in-store, or over the phone - there's no game-playing about where to get the best deal.
The company pulls in around $750 million in annual revenue with about 1,100 employees. For a furniture retailer that's stayed privately held and employee-owned, that's pretty impressive. They're not trying to be the biggest or the cheapest - they're trying to be the best at what they do, which is making furniture that lasts and treating people right in the process.
