Who pays for return shipping?
At this time, we are only able to offer return labels with FedEx; if you would prefer a different carrier, you must cover the cost of shipping. For returns from outside the Continental United States, we are unable to cover return shipping, so the customer is responsible for shipping the item back to our distribution center.

Editor's Take

So here's the thing about Royal Robbins-it's not just another outdoor clothing brand with a cool backstory. It's basically what happens when two legendary climbers decide the gear available in the 1960s just isn't cutting it anymore.

Royal Robbins met Liz Burkner in Yosemite's Camp 4 in the 1960s. Royal had established himself as one of the world's best climbers, and Liz became the first woman to climb Half Dome. In the years of adventure that followed, they married and together founded Royal Robbins apparel. And honestly? That origin story isn't just marketing fluff. These were people who literally tested their clothing on some of the most challenging rock faces in America.

What makes Royal Robbins different is this commitment to what they call "clean climbing" ethics-basically, leaving no trace and respecting the natural environment. The clothes Royal Robbins makes today are still cotton, hemp, wool, and recycled fibers, and they're still found in sprinter vans outside Joshua Tree, campsites in Bend, guest houses in Chiang Mai, and anywhere else you call Basecamp. That's not hyperbole. The brand has sold over a million of their Desert Pucker shirts alone, which tells you something about how well this stuff holds up.

But let's talk about what you're actually getting. The company focuses on natural and lower-impact fibers-think organic cotton, hemp, merino wool, and recycled materials. In 2023 the brand reduced overall emissions by 37% compared to the 2019 baseline and achieved its annual Scope 3 emissions reduction targets per product-down by 22% from 2022. So if you're the type who cares about where your clothes come from and how they're made, Royal Robbins is putting their money where their mouth is.

The clothing itself? It's designed for that weird overlap between serious outdoor adventure and everyday life. You know how most hiking gear looks ridiculous at a coffee shop, and most casual clothes fall apart on the trail? Royal Robbins lives in that sweet spot. Their stuff is wrinkle-resistant, durable enough for multi-day treks, but styled so you don't look like you just stumbled out of REI when you're grabbing lunch in town.

One thing worth noting-the brand got acquired by Swedish outdoor company Fenix Outdoor in 2018 (they also own Fjällräven), which gave them more resources for sustainability initiatives while keeping the original mission intact. Liz Robbins even rejoined as a senior advisor and still serves on the board of the Yosemite Climbing Association.

The price point sits in that premium-but-not-luxury range. You're paying more than fast fashion, sure, but you're getting clothes that'll last years instead of months. And given that the brand offers a warranty on manufacturing defects for the reasonable lifetime of the product, they're clearly confident in what they're making.
