Editor's Take

Rural King isn't your typical big-box retailer-it's basically the Swiss Army knife of farm and home stores. Founded in 1960 and now operating 135 stores across 14 states, this family-owned chain has carved out a unique niche that's part Tractor Supply, part general store, and part community gathering spot.

What sets Rural King apart? They offer free coffee and popcorn to customers inside their stores-a throwback touch that feels genuine rather than gimmicky. But the real draw is their eclectic product mix. Rural King sells work clothing and work boots, equine and pet supplies, live chicks and rabbits, hunting/fishing equipment and supplies, firearms and ammunition, tractor/trailer parts and accessories, lawn and garden supplies, sprinkler/irrigation parts, power tools, fencing, welding and pump supplies, riding mowers, agricultural chemicals and many other farm and home supplies.

The company's growth story is pretty remarkable. In December 2015, Rural King announced they had reached, for the first time, $1 billion in total sales. That's serious money for a retailer that started in a 7,200-square-foot former implement building in Mattoon, Illinois.

And here's something interesting-they're not just riding the rural wave, they're actively expanding it. The company also operates an online store, as well as offering an online gun store. Their RK Guns division and tractor sales show they're thinking beyond traditional farm supply into specialized markets that require real expertise.

The stores themselves feel like controlled chaos in the best way possible. You might walk in for chicken feed and leave with work boots, a fishing rod, and some holiday toys for the kids. Rural King also sells toys, especially around the holidays. It's that "you never know what you'll find" factor that keeps people coming back-and probably explains why they've managed to thrive while other rural retailers have struggled.
