Editor's Take

So here's the thing about RX Safety-they're basically the scrappy underdog of the prescription safety glasses world, and honestly? That's exactly what makes them interesting.

Started back in 1910 when the founder's great-grandfather worked at Bausch + Lomb, then spun off into his own company in 1920 called Phillips Lens Company. Fast-forward through some name changes, and in 2001 his descendants took over, eventually becoming RX Safety in 2007. It's one of those classic American manufacturing stories-four generations deep, still family-owned, still making everything in-house.

And that "in-house" part isn't just marketing speak. They use top-of-the-line digital processing equipment and have a full line of CNC edging machines, advanced CNC generators, professional polishers, edgers, and coating machines. They ship up to 200 packages daily from their New Jersey facility, which is pretty impressive for what started as a four-person operation.

But here's where it gets really interesting-they've carved out this specific niche in prescription safety glasses that most people don't even know exists. All their prescription safety glasses meet ANSI standards, with ANSI Z87.1 or Z87+ High Impact ratings. Since 2001 they've been producing factory-direct ANSI Z87.1 prescription safety glasses, RX safety sunglasses, and tactical eyewear-many built to MIL-PRF-32432.

The pricing is where they really shine. Safety frames start as low as $20 and can go up to $75, with standard single vision lenses in polycarbonate starting at $40. That's significantly cheaper than what you'd pay at most optical shops, especially for safety-rated prescription glasses.

Now, I'll be honest-the customer reviews are... mixed. Some people absolutely love them, praising the quality and value. Others have had issues with fit and customer service. Their return policy is pretty strict: prescription lenses are non-refundable, though they'll apply 50% of what you paid toward a new pair within 30 days. It's not the most generous policy, but it makes sense given that prescription lenses are custom-made.

What's cool is their approach to the whole "how do I know if these will fit" problem. They suggest purchasing frames for fit first-if you're not satisfied, you can return for a full refund or they can send out another you might be interested in. Smart workaround for online eyewear shopping.

The company feels authentic in a way that's rare these days. They've maintained their commitment to excellence in prescription and safety eyewear through all the name changes and growth over the decades. Whether that translates to the perfect customer experience every time? That's probably going to depend on your specific needs and expectations.
