Welcome to a one-of-a-kind hospital where a thumb-sized Pacific pocket mouse receives as specialized care as a one-ton rhino. Beginning first as a veterinary dream, this state-of-the-art facility became a reality when it opened in 2001. Whether a dik-dik, a gorilla , or a pelican, every species gets world-class care at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park's Harter Veterinary Medical Center.

This summer, we're celebrating the 25th anniversary of this groundbreaking hospital. Beyond the building's innovative, patient-first design, the dedicated wildlife health experts that work here aren't strangers to thinking outside the box for medical and surgical care.

Bright green with a laughter-like call, the thick-billed parrot is the only remaining parrot species native to North America. As part of our Southwest Conservation Hub, explore how cross-border collaboration is at the heart of saving and protecting them.

IMPROVING A HAIRY SITUATION

In the remote Andes Mountains, we're deploying new technologies and techniques to learn about elusive and vulnerable Andean bears. Together with our partners, we created a crucial conservation link between the San Diego Zoo and our Amazonia Conservation Hub to safeguard the future for these bears.

Quino checkerspot butterflies—formally one of the most common butterflies in Southern California—face a fragile future.
