A familiar figure soars across the wide-open skies of the Southwest for the very first time. In a full-circle moment, the 250th California condor chick hatched at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park was successfully introduced into native habitats, taking his rightful place in the ecosystem. His name, Emaay (pronounced “eh-MY”), is the Kumeyaay word for “sky,” and it couldn’t be more fitting for this milestone.

In 1982, there were only 22 California condors remaining on Earth. Through decades of groundbreaking and collaborative conservation efforts, their population has grown to more than 560 condors today. They’ve made a mighty comeback and every condor is crucial for the future of this critically endangered species.

You celebrated Emaay’s hatch with us, and now you’re part of his journey as he spreads his wings to enter a remarkable new chapter.
