Here's the thing about Shinola-it's kind of a love letter to Detroit wrapped in leather and steel. Founded in 2011, this American lifestyle brand based in Detroit produces and sells watches, bicycles, leather goods, clocks, home goods, and jewelry, taking its name from a common saying that harkens back to the defunct Shinola shoe polish company.
The backstory alone is worth the price of admission. As the story goes, the discussion around naming the company got a touch heated, leading a team member to exclaim, "You don't know sh*t from Shinola!" Shortly thereafter, they had a name known the world over, with roots in American manufacturing, and synonymous with quality-and Shinola was born. That's basically the most Detroit origin story you could ask for.
But what really sets them apart is the manufacturing angle. Currently, the factory has the capacity to finish the assembly of 500,000 watches in a production year. And they're not just slapping parts together-most of the workers assembling watches are local to Detroit, and many of them come from automotive manufacturing. So you've got folks who used to build cars now building timepieces. There's something poetic about that transition.
The product range has expanded way beyond watches. They've got bicycles (frames made in Wisconsin, naturally), leather goods crafted from Chicago's legendary Horween Leather, and even jewelry. Shinola's leather goods and leather watch straps are made using leather predominantly supplied by the Chicago-based tannery, Horween Leather, which has been in operation since 1905. And if you're really committed to the brand experience, there's the Shinola Hotel in downtown Detroit-a 129-room, eight-story boutique hotel opened in January 2019 as part of a multimillion-dollar development project.
Notice how everything circles back to American craftsmanship? That's intentional. The watches themselves are assembled in the U.S., though components come from Europe and Asia-which sparked some FTC scrutiny back in the day. They had to dial back the "Made in America" messaging a bit, but the Detroit assembly and the jobs created there remain central to their identity.
Prices aren't exactly bargain-basement. Watches typically start around $550 and climb from there, with some models pushing well past $2,000. But you're paying for that Detroit-built narrative, the quality materials, and honestly, a pretty solid timepiece. The Runwell remains their flagship model-the first one they ever made sold out in a week back in 2013.
What's interesting is how they've managed to thread the needle between luxury and accessibility. They're not trying to be Rolex, but they're definitely a step up from your average department store watch. And the retail experience reflects that-stores in major cities, knowledgeable staff, the whole nine yards.
The brand's grown to over 400 employees since 2011, which in Detroit's economic landscape means something. They're not just selling watches; they're selling the idea that American manufacturing can come back, one handcrafted product at a time. Whether that's marketing genius or genuine mission depends on your perspective, but the watches do get made in Detroit, and people do have jobs because of it.
