Editor's Take

So here's the thing about Sizzix-they're basically the Apple of the crafting world, except instead of making your phone obsolete every year, they make your scissors feel completely useless. This company has been the leading manufacturer of die cutting machines, dies, and embossing folders, and honestly, once you see what their machines can do, regular cutting tools just seem... primitive.

The story goes back to the 1970s when the original company, Ellison, created die cutting machines for classrooms. Then in 2001, they branched out and created Sizzix specifically for crafters and DIY-ers. It's kind of like how Disney started with cartoons and ended up owning half the entertainment universe-except Sizzix stuck to their lane and absolutely dominated it.

What's fascinating is their headquarters nestled in Lake Forest, California, about 3 hours south of Zzyzzx road, in this beautiful large town on the Pacific Ocean where temperatures are usually warm and the sun is usually shining. And yes, that name connection isn't coincidental-the story of Zzyzzx actually became the inspiration for the now famous brand name Sizzix, though there were other names in consideration, Sizzix was the choice that resonated with everyone.

But here's what really sets them apart: their products are among the best in the industry, especially when it comes to die-cutting and embossing. The Big Shot machine allows you to do bigger projects, and they make the most incredible die designs, whether you're looking for shapes, phrases, or elaborate projects. We're talking about machines that can cut through everything from paper and fabric to leather and metal-basically anything scissors can handle, but with precision that would make a surgeon jealous.

From scrapbooking, cardmaking and papercrafting to fashion, quilting and home décor, they provide people of all ages and abilities the opportunity to express themselves in countless new ways. Whether it's young parents making their own party invitations, innovative artists trying mixed media, or grandparents making handmade gifts with love, Sizzix has a place in every home and heart.

The company's philosophy is refreshingly straightforward: their #1 focus is and will always be to inspire a fun, memorable making experience. And they've managed to stay true to that vision while growing into a multinational corporation that's found in over 100 countries. Not bad for a company that started in a two-bedroom apartment with a simple idea about making classroom bulletin boards easier to create.
