Editor's Take

So here's the thing about Skechers-it's kind of become this massive footwear empire that nobody really saw coming. Founded in 1992 by Robert Greenberg (who'd previously started LA Gear), the company is now the third largest footwear brand in the world. That's wild when you think about it.

The brand started with utility-style boots that were huge in the grunge era, but they didn't stay stuck in the '90s. Instead, they pivoted hard into comfort technology, and honestly? That's where they found their groove. In 2023, Skechers made its debut on the Fortune 500, which basically confirms what anyone who's been to a mall lately already knows-these shoes are everywhere.

But what really sets Skechers apart is how they've managed to stay relevant across basically every demographic. They've got performance lines for serious athletes, casual styles for everyday wear, and kids' shoes that actually light up (because of course they do). Their brands include everything from Skechers Sport and the charity line Bobs to Go Walk, Go Run, and Go Golf. Notice how they've basically covered every possible activity you might do while wearing shoes?

And then there's the marketing. Skechers has worked with everyone from Snoop Dogg to Martha Stewart, from NFL players to professional golfers. Since 2010, they've been a regular Super Bowl advertiser, which tells you something about their budget and their ambitions. They're not playing small.

The company operates in approximately 180 countries, which is basically everywhere. They support their accounts with more than 70 regional offices and showrooms across North America, South America, Europe and Asia. That's not a shoe company-that's a global operation.

And if you're wondering whether they're actually innovating or just riding on brand recognition, consider this: they've introduced Hands Free Slip-ins (exactly what it sounds like), Arch Fit with podiatrist-certified support, and Max Cushioning technology. Whether you think those are game-changers or just marketing terms probably depends on how much you care about your footwear, but the point is they're still pushing new products.

The Manhattan Beach headquarters tells you something about the company's California roots, and they've stayed committed to that community even as they've expanded globally. It's that balance between local identity and global reach that seems to be working for them.
